View Full Version : Loppi's Day

Today was a stressful day. I woke up finding Loppi really lifeless and she didn't seem to want to do ANYTHING. Usually, when I get up and greet her, she'd come pawing at my legs and running around but she stayed in her bed today. I saw vomit in her pet carrier and not long after, I realized that she had diarrhea. Her pee pad is downstairs but she couldn't even go down the stairs! She kept on whining until I brought her downstairs where she did her business and then patiently waited for me to bring her up again.

Instead of her usual breakfast, I fed her chicken and rice...she ate it after a while but went poopoo a whole lot more. By 2 in the afternoon, she was just not moving at all and her back legs didn't seem to be working for her - she had troubles getting up and about and needed my support to lift her back up before she could walk. I immediately called the vet, booked an appointment for 4:15, and worried until that time. The vet took her temperature and noticed her funny stiff walk on the back legs...she has a slight fever. The vet suspects that maybe she fell or something and injured her legs somehow..then I thought of a possibility...perhaps her diarrhea started late last night and in the rush of going downstairs to go potty, she fell. I told the vet that and she said it could be possible since stuff like this is stressful to the little ones and it could have made her weak enough to lose her balance or something. Well, of course after the vet pressed around to feel her tummy, she ended up going on the floor so her vet decided she might as well do a fecal sample. It was good that happened because she came back telling me that Loppi had an overgrowth of bacteria in her stomach. I can't remember what the name was but it started with a C. Anyway, she was sent home with 2 types of oral medication.

Loppi seems to be a little better now. She actually jumped up on me just a while ago and her tail started wagging again. Poor girl, she just seems so stressed out.

Poor Loppi! And, poor YOU - goodness!

Was it coccidia, by chance? Chloe had a bout with that a week after I brought her home, and it scared me half to death. Thankfully the oral meds and very bland diet fixed it, but not before the two of us spent a long weekend on the sofa, with me cuddling her in between her running to her piddle pads with explosive diarrhea.

I hope she's feeling better soon, and is back to her frisky self in no time! :)

We need a Loppi - update! Is she feeling any better today?

Oh yes, I should have updated earlier! She is doing better now. I had to confine her to downstairs last night so she didn't have to go up and down the stairs since her legs weren't doing so well. They seem better today..more walking around and she can get up by herself now. The meds have really helped her. I believe her diarrhea has stopped since early this morning when she got up but her bumbum is really inflamed :( She keeps trying to bite at it..I bet it bugs her, but since she can't reach, she scoots.

Yep, it was Coccidia and I forgot to mention that she had not one, but TWO types of bacterial parasites in her tummy. Both starts with C. We still don't know what has caused it yet but she is to go for a check-up in a few days to see if the medicine has gotten rid of both of them.

Kathy,

I'm so glad to hear Loppi's diarrhea has stopped!

That was the scariest part when Chloe had her bout with Coccidia - I was so worried that she couldn't keep any nutrients in her that I was watching her like a hawk for signs of her blood sugar dropping dangerously low. My Vet put her on a bland, canned diet for three days along with the medicine, and told me to try to get a few "fingers full" of honey into her through the day, at least until the diarrhea eased.

(I know this is probably terrible for her, but we also shared a couple popsicles while she was sick. :) She LOVES them now, and it's become our nightly ritual before bed...of course, she only gets a few licks, but she thinks it's the best thing EVER!:)

Loppi is a lucky girl to have a Mom who takes such good care of her! Chloe says to tell her she just needs to let those nasty bacteria germs know who's boss, and she'll be all better in no time! :)

Gracie's hiney hole was inflammed one day. I put some vasaline on it. She usually does not like to have her hiney touched but she seemed to know I was going to make her feel better and stood still for me to help her. The vasaline had no other chemical to worry about and it helped right away.

Besides honey, you can keep Nurtrical in the house this is a vitamin supplement and it keeps their blood sugar levels up too. I think you could also use karo (corn) syrup if you had to. One of my friends had a ferret go into shock and the vet told her to give it karo syrup.

It's been a while. How is Loppi since the last update? Sorry to bug you, but any new information on sweet Loppi? I looked up Coccidia when Chloe joined. Well, I hope they are both fine now.
