Hello to everyone....I'm new to this site! I have a question about my chihuahua teething. He is turning 6 months old in 2 days. Last night while chewing on one of his treats he lost a tooth and then about 10 minutes later lost another one. They're both back teeth. Is this normal for him to be losing them so quickly? Diesel is the first Chihuahua I've ever owned.

Hi and Welcome to Clubchi JillH and Diesel. He is so adorable! I love his color.

It's normal for them to lose their teeth like this. I think it's good too, since a lot of Chihuahuas have to have their baby teeth pulled. Roman lost his last baby teeth just 3 days before we had him neutered at 8 months old. For a while he had a double row of teeth and was nick named alien baby. :)

Were you able to save the teeth? I have a few of them, but Roman and Elle swallowed most of them. LOL

I can't wait to hear more about Diesel. Make yourself at home, and jump in anywhere. :)

Thanks Barb! I kind of thought this was normal but wanted to make sure before I called the vet freaking out. I did get to save both of his little teeth. We bought him some new Milkbone treats to help with his bad breath I guess that kind of helped with the process of him losing his teeth. At first I thought maybe the Milkbones were too hard for him but we did buy the ones for puppies.

I really hope that he loses them on his own and doesn't have to have any pulled.

It's a pleasure meeting you.....I look forwards to chatting with you and everyone else on Clubchi!

Jill, It's nice to meet you as well. :) We call our vet all the time over nothing, or at least minor problems, but I still check here with everyone too. When Roman was a puppy, he got into my purse and ate some of my Trident gum. I was afraid it would bind his intestines up. I checked here first, but I was ready to call the vet as well. The bad part was it was a holiday. Luckily, Heuser's mommy here knew what I needed to do. So Roman had a treat of white bread and also had a few jokes posted of Roman blowing bubbles. LOL

Milkbones are very good for thier teeth. My Sheltie LOVED them. She even had her favorite flavors that she would pick out of a line-up. LOL She started waking us up in the middle of the night for them and would not let up until we gave her about 6 of them in the right colors. Then she would demand a drink of water brought to her on the bed--followed by a take-her-time stroll out in the yard at 3 a.m. Although they are not the only treat that made her over weight, she was getting too many of them, so we had to stop buying them. lol Now we brush all three dogs teeth with little tooth brushes and dog tooth paste. It took them just a few brushings to know what it was and sure stops the doggie breath. They love it so much now that we can't move their toothbrush box without them going nuts to take their turn. My 2 Chihuahuas love to watch Sheba get hers brushed first and make sure we do a good job. ;-) They are like little dental assistants. :-) LOL Their favorite chew toy is their bumpy dental Nylabone.

JillH-Welcome to CC!!! If I only knew how many times I called the vet after owning my first Chihuahua, LOL!!!

This all sounds very normal to me, the harder treat finally loosend up the roots enough for Diesel to loose his baby teeth. Keep an eye on his front teeth, it is extremelly common for Chihuahuas to retain baby teeth that need to be removed asap to prevent plaque/cavaties...We call it "shark teeth." While I agree with Barb that Milkbones are a good consistancy to induce teeth loss, I don't agree in terms of nutrition. There are a bunch of different toothing products out there for puppies that consist of wholesome, nutritious ingredients. I like "bully sticks" and beef tendons (high in protein-look for U.S.D.A. approved products) along with Greenies (only give in moderate preportion as they are high in minerals that can be taxing to dog's livers).

It is amazing how far the pet industry has come-research in both vaccinations and nutrition can add YEARS to your dog's life (and once you are owned by Chihuahua, every moment becomes precious)!

PS-I have two/three Chihuahuas-Heuser (like anHEUSER-bucsh (pronounced HI-zer)) and Tally, along with a "foster dog" named Bently-all show dogs and great companions-more on them later!

Thanks so much for the information and advice from you both! I'm sure I'll be asking alot more questions in the near future. When do they start loosing their front teeth?? Diesel lost another one on Friday night, so that's three so far. I try to switch up his treats so he's not getting Milkbones all the time. He likes the pup-er-roni, but I'm not for sure how healthy those are for him.

He is such an enjoyment to have around the house. My fiance works in NASCAR and is on the road most of the year. He bought Diesel for me so that I wouldn't be lonely when he's out of town. I must say that it really helps having him to spoil when Terry (my fiance) isn't around to spoil! I take Diesel with me on photo shoots. The photographers I work with love him to death. He's becoming a regular little supermodel puppy!! I'll have to post a picture of him posing!

You are welcome! Check out other treat options for Diesel, there are hundreds of choices out there-my favorite for teething are called "Bully Sticks" or "Beef Tendons" and the names are exactly what the products are-all natural, not added ingredients, great for chewing.

Some Chihuahuas need assistance in loosing a few baby teeth, Heuser needed all 4 of his Canines pulled at the age of 10 months and Bently needed his lower, right, Canine pulled at 12 months old. If they don't come out on their own, ask your vet for advice. Baby teeth shouldn't remain in their mouths longer than 1 year old, they are temporary teeth and get brittle and break as they age.

Welcome Jill and Diesel!
We are sorta new here also! I have one Chi. his name is Chili Pepper he is 7 months old.(Well thats what his pappers say but we won't go into that)
I'm glad to see the post about the teeth because Chili started loosing his a couple of days ago. So far I have counted two front teeth and two back teeth. I know he has lost another one when I see him setting around chewing! Chili also has really bad breath and I had him a Vet app. this Friday for it! I'm not talking puppy breath I mean really really bad breath! But I think I have found the source of it? His baby teeth seem to be really bad shape (Just his back ones). But I am going to keep the appt. just to make shure! The lady I bought him off of had several Chi.'s so I know he got the problem from there! He also was on some really cheap dog food ! We brush every other day with a chicken flav. toothpaste. He loves it! Well welcome to ClubChi and hope to hear more about Diesel!
