What do you feed your pup/dog?

Naz is on Science but I am slowly switching over to purina... I know Science is much better but I can't afford that on a regular basis...

I love Iams too but that too can run high.... My cats were on that for a while and I loved how great their coats were but when things are tight theya re the area that gets hit..... I hate having to switch so I figure its just best to stay with one I can afford... SO any recommendations for brands that are not budget busters?
Purina seems good but I know there are others that are semilar that may be better....
Any thoughts?

Mine used to be on Bil-Jac and I thought that is wasn't as spendy as most but depending on where you get it also.
Mine are now on Science Diet z/d b/c of Lu's allergies and wieght gain.
Check online for cheaper prices.

Mine are pretty spoiled and I have to admit I probaly couldn't afford it if they were bigger, but I have my two on a mix of Wellness, Innova, Bil Jac and soon Solid Gold. I find they like the variety and that way I can be sure that they are getting proper nutrition-which by the way may be another reason why Naz is found of grazing. But supplementing his kibble with fresh fruits and veggies is a great idea too once he gets older and a less sensitive stomach...Glad to hear he is okay, don't be suprised if he has a round or two of worms-they almost always pick some up from their mother's milk and it takes a few treatments of wormer to knock them all out of the system-worms grow in cycles and many wormers only attack them at a certain stage, so the ones that are still in their egg sack or larvae still have a chance to mature and must be eliminated too...

I agree Lys, Lucius had to be treated 4 separate times each about a month to a month in a half. Don't be worried Bren, this is all normal and we will help you through all these puppy changes. :D

Roman and Sheba both eat Science Diet. Sheba has to because of allergies and weight, and she also needs senior diet blend (Roman Adult blend now)- it's just perfect for her and she doesn't get sick with it. Both of them really enjoy each meal of it, although at one time I had wanted to change to "something better" but this is just fine for them.

Loppi eats a mix of Innova and Nutro. Some days, she'll only eat the Innova kibbles and on others, only the Nutro.

I think Naz has an allergy to Purina...
I called the vet today cause he hasn't been doing any better and I haven't added any more he has been getting 2/3 science 1/3 purina per feeding
(math is bad) but he eats 2 cups of food total a day...

anyways he still is having off and on runny bowels and is still dragging his butt...
which the vet thinks is cause of the food so I may have to look into something different but for now I think I'm just going to stay on Science til I can find something that doesnt upset his system......

Went to the store to get some Science diet... I hadn't had to buy it yet I got two bags free from the vet anyways.... THERE aint no way I'm paying 20 - 30 for dogfood... I love him but there aint no way! Is it this expensive where you are???
When your on a 200.00 per pay period budget for food...

I'm gonna try perhaps Iams.... they are expensive but better than 30.. (12.00 - 15.00) but they are good and perhaps his tummy can tolerate them better....... I didn't see any other brand other than Euraba I know I spelled that wrong lol but they ran 15 - 20 so I'm gonna try Iams....

I'm stopping the purina period and to see what happens and then will rebegin mixing in the Iams.....
Hopefully this will stop the off and on runs and problems.....

I always give mine alittle ground beef and rice if they get the runs I never had that problem with Nina or Kutchum but i have with other dogs and thats what the vet told me to give them.

Hi Bren, just wanted to add my thoughts...I have found several reports from different sources that say that although premium food costs more initially, that over all that the cost per cup of food is actually LESS than the cheaper brands because the dog needs less of it to get the required nutrional needs and so you don't have to buy it as often. I understand about the budget but I thought you might want to look into that...
Lys

PS-Puppies often have tummy issues that are often misdiagnosed by vets as changing food for the simple reason that it is easier to keep them on the food they are on then to bother with figuring out the problem-which can be sensitivity to certain foods, teething issues, parasites, vaccination reactions, etc...I'm not sure, but I know certain breeds have specific issues with diet/certain foods and the cocker may be one of them, do you know of any or their common breed problems?

mine are on science diet.
They used to be on a cheaper brand but I agree with what Lys said about needing less of the more expensive brand so that it works out cheaper in the end.

I was trying to introduce BARF (bones and raw food) but I dont have enough freezer space. I tried it for a short while and they loved it and their coats were amazing. Its time consuming and a bit gross though. When I get a new freezer I am changing them over to BARF.

He is already on science and eats like a horse so..... I'd hate to see what he'd need if he was able to go on cheaper stuff.....

Anyway starting the switch to Iams.... So far so good (no loose bowels)
I'm hoping Iams will work for him they aren't as expensive and are good from what I have heard...

Naz has made the switch and NOOOOOOO problems! I went a little fast but thats only cause he was running out of Science LOL.... BUt he is doing great and LOVES the Iams!
Although its not what I orig shot for ....... this is a switch I can live with especially since he is able to tolerate this with no tummy troubles and its more reasonable in price than science....
He'll just be my spoiled child! SSSHHHH Don't tell hope and hershey who are on Purina LOL 8)

The kids were on puppy science diet, then eukanuba, iams, solid gold, now I've got them on wellness. I guess it all depends on your dog. Glad to hear the Iams is working great for Naz! Yay  no slacky butt. LOL.

I've never heard of wellness! Where are you buying it? :?:

Its usually sold in specialty stores, go to www.oldmotherhubbard.com (I think) and there is a store finder on there for their products.

Another thought I had was that if you are worried about Naz getting enough nutrition, you could look into a multi-vitamin from a good source. Normally, experts agree that if a dog is fed properly, no supplementation is necessary but since you are on a tight budget, it might be a good alternative for you instead of expensive food. SOLID GOLD has a good multi-vitamin that is in a power form, all you do is add it to his food...

Any thoughts? when we get our puppy we are going to go with iams but our puppy shouldnt eat that much. Maybe if you put a little money back each pay day in a dog food fund and when you need food youll have it.I think thats what we are going to do because like you said there coat is so pretty
