Okay, so let's just say that Tally is VERY pretty and VERY sweet and you know what they say about that right? She is not that bright. By no means is she dumb, just doesn't "get" things sometimes.

We have had her for a year now and are proud to announce that Tally now knows "sit," "stand pretty," "down" (still working on this one), "sit-up" (about 75% of the time), and "boing" where she jumps up and I catch her midair (her best trick because she LOVES to be held, LOL!). So we are very proud of her and will keep on working on that whole "when mom says _____, I do this" etc.! Silly girl!

She also has learned "wait" and will stay in the spot a tell her to until released by my "okay" and can also understand when we say "G-R-E-E-N-I-E," what a ham!

Why not now?! Puppies learn/develop the fastest between 8-12 weeks and can do more than one thing at once...

Tally sounds very smart, Lys! I think that's a lot she learned in the year you've had her. Wow! It's hard to believe you've had her a year. :woot:

Hi Lys,

I have to say my Paco is a smartie. He learned how to sit, lay and rollover by the time he was 6 months old. How did you teach Tally to stay and stand pretty? I really want to teach Paco them two things. Any suggestions would be great.

That is great Dawn! Dogs actually learn more in the first few months of their life then any other time-that's why its important to teach them the important things early!

Tally and Heuser actually know the "WAIT" commmand, I like it better then "Stay" because too many commands start with "S." Also, they will do it while doing any other command like on a walk at a corner, going downstairs, holding a pose for the camera, etc.

I guess taught them (it was really second nature) by utilizing their show training (Show dogs are taught to focus in on bait and remain still). When offering a treat, get Paco's attention and don't give any commands. He will try to grab the treat and then say "Wait" (draw it out "Waaaayyyyyyyyyt") as SOON as his pauses for even a second, reward him! Gradually, lengthen the time between saying the command and giving him the treat.

The "Stand" command can be more dificult to teach to dogs who know "Sit" really well. Show breeders don't usually teach their puppies the command since that is exactly what we DON'T want the dog to do until they are solid in stacking on the ground and table (standing=stacking), LOL! With Paco sitting beside you, place the treat immediately in front of the nose and draw it forward in a straight line (keep his nose RIGHT on it) while helping him by putting your hand under his belly and gently lifting up and giving whatever command you want. Heuser and Tally know it a "stand PRETTY" to take the emphasis off the "S" or "Hold."

Let me know if you have any questions!
