I know there's been so many threads about this disorder, but Loppi's condition seems to worsen daily. It used to be so that she'd do that honking thing once in a while, but now, she does it whenever she gets excited from seeing me! I'm sick worried about her whenever she does it because they last longer now. I've read in one of the previous threads that it's normal, but is it still normal if the condition worsens? I don't know any vets around here that specializes in Chihuahuas.

yeah, you know what. Britney does this alot to. She also does it when we're outside for her walk and I do not want people to think I'm choking her! I hope nothing bad happens to he

Where's Alyssa?? She always knows stuff like this.

I'm here Crystal and thank you for the complimant!

As far as the honking goes, it is completely normal and Loppi is just fine. Both Tally and Heuser honk when they are excited and I have also noticed that they get worse when its cold/dry outside or right after I put perfume on. Also, Heuser tends to honk when he is on walks too some times and so I just make sure that I never make it worse by putting a collar/leash on him and stick to a harness that doesn't put pressure on his throat.

There is nothing your vet will or can do for her so I really wouldn't recommend wasting your time or $$$ going. I know it sounds terrible and it is hard to hear your baby straining for breath, I always have to spend 2-3 minutes as soon as I get home calming them down so that they stop honking (hence my signature "The Honkie Kids")! I have found that holding them up so that they are parellel to the ground (in a "sit up" position) helps and pinching their nostrils for a second or two with my fingers until they breath out of their mouths relieves the symptoms the quickest.

Hope this helps!

:D Thanks so much for the advice Alyssa!! My aunt has told me that Chewie does the honking as well but I've never heard him...and we're usually over there every day! :P

Thanks for your help, Alyssa. Yeah, it sounds like she's almost dying if she doesn't calm down right away.

Hmmmm, blocking her nose!? I think I'll try that the next time she does it. All that I can think of doing is rubbing her little neck

I rub Casey's neck like Crystal does and she calms down. She gets better pretty quick with any sort of nurturing attention tho.

I'm so glad that you guys brought this up again!
Taco is the worst honker ever! My mom freaks out evertime she hears him and wants me to rush him to the vet. I try to explain to her whats going on, but she thinks he is having some kind of attack. I always rub his throat and it gets better. I think the cold air does make it worse b/c he wasn't as bad in the summer. Toby only honks when we go for a walk. People look at them like what are you doing to your poor dog!?!? ............

All 3 of mine honk too, when they all do it at the same time people freak out and say "whats wrong with your dogs?", its summer here and they hardly do it but I agree that winter is the worst time for it.

I do what Bev and Crystal do and rub their necks, it seems to do the trick. I have never tried the nostril trick, I might see if it works better - thanks for the advice Lys.

I think your right about the cold weather Alicia! Tally and Heuser both get really bad when it is really cold and dry out-we went two whole days honking every 2-3 minutes and it was wearing us all out (like a child with a cough)!!! They also do it when they are super-excited on walks and we get the same "what the ?#$@" looks from people!!! Oh, well what can you do?!

After putting my fingers over their nostrils for a couple of seconds a few times, all I have to do is grab either H or T's snouts and they relax so I don't even have to force them to breath through their mouths! Its like they have figured out that I am trying to help and just having Mommy's two fingers by their noses calms them down enough to get a good breath or two in there to open the airway...

Glad my info helped! That's why I write!
