Hi Everyone!

I am new, just joined today. I have a 9 month old chihuahua names Paco and I love him to death! He is the greatest thing, he is my first puppy and I am blessed to have him.

I have a question.. he is supposedly a long-haired chi, he does have hair on his ears, legs, tail and chin but not alot of hair. For those of you that have long-haired chi's, did your chi have long hair at 9 months or was it still growing?

Thanks!

Dawn

Hi Dawn and Paco. Welcome to Club Chihuahua. I've had Roman since he was a little pup and it took a while for him to get all his long hair. Now it changes with the seasons as well, ie fuller and thick for the winter, then after shedding in the Spring, he gets a more smooth appearance, but still very long. :D I'd say Roman had his long hair at one year old, but I'll have to look at his pictures to really be sure. I wondered the same thing since his tail didn't have the long feathering. It looked like a short coated Chi's tail. Now it's so full and long for winter, it drags on the floor when it's not wagging.

I forgot to ask, is Paco a little fluffy looking? Any pictures?

Hi Dawn and Paco and Welcome to Club Chihuahua!!! Its so nice to meet new Wawa lovers and everyone here is great as I'm sure you'll find out!

As far as Paco's coat, there are several factors involved that determine the length
and density of his adult coat. Right now, Paco is going through what show exhibitors call the "uglies" and is inbetween his puppy and adult coats. As he matures, you should notice a change in both the texture and amount of hair. Most people agree that their coat at 18 months is the coat they will have but as he gets older, it will fill out more. And of course, he will lose or blow it with the change of seasons-usually one full blow (meaning he loses most of it) and one semi-blow in preperation for growing his winter coat.

Of course, genetics really determine how much or how little coat that he grows but proper bathing and grooming can also contribute. Here is what the official AKC Standard has to say about the Long Coat:
In Long Coats, the coat should be of a soft texture, either flat or slightly curly, with undercoat preferred. Ears-Fringed. (Heavily fringed ears may be tipped slightly if due to the fringes and not to weak ear leather, never down.) Tail-Full and long (as a plume). Feathering on feet and legs, pants on hind legs and large ruff on the neck desired and preferred. Disqualification: In Long Coats, too thin coat that resembles bareness.

Anyways, I can give a few suggestions on coat care if you'd like-let me know!! otherwise I will just keep going and going and going, Hehehe!
Oh gosh-don't get me started, lol!!!
Alyssa
Oops! I almost forgot-I currently have two chihuahuas, a 5.25 lbs., long coat, black spotted on white, 5 year old, bitch named "Tally" or Show Me's Up Close'N Personal; and a 4 lbs, smooth coat, fawn, 3 year old, dog named "Heuser" (like anHEUSER-Busch) or Ch. DNK's Pocketful of Gold.

So glad you found us. Hope to see pictures soon of your little baby!

Hmm. Are you able to resize them down?

Romans Mom

Here's what H and T's mom says she does to resize:

Quote..."I downsize the original image size to 30% on my editing program and then transfer it to Photobucket. That way, the pixel size is much smaller and I just add them to my posts...I'm not that good at it all either and couldn't even tell you what editing program I use..."

Paco's so cute!!! He looks like a sweetheart. I love his color and I see his long coat so well. Roman's tail looked just like that at the same age. :D Aww! Who's the kitty walking by Paco?

Lys, I love H and T's pics too! I know what you mean with the males having a fuller look...like Sheba and the "lassie look"...I believe they used male Collies for the "Lassie's" in the movies and tv show.

Tally's cute sitting there thinking, "Now the cookie!?!" Now the cookie!?!:woot:

Here is more of Paco. He is 8 months old, do you think he'll get longer hair?

Romans Mom
10-27-2004, 12:09 PM
Aww! Oh yeah, Paco's hair is going to get longer--he's still in puppy mode. What a pretty tail. That's about what Roman's looked like at that age, maybe not even that much hair. :)

Paco is in his "uglies" and will get more coat as he gets older. Also, it will probably change in texture a little. He is just in that akward, teenage boy stage and he's still growing.
