View Full Version : What do your Chihuahuas eat from?

I'm going to get each pup a new bowl and was wondering, what do your Chihuahuas and other furbabies eat from?

Mine all eat from plastic, Roman has a double dog dish and doesn't need a double, Sheba eats off of a plastic RubberMaid lid, and Elle has a plastic dog dish that's made out of a very hard thick plastic that's made for dogs, I think. I got it at a pet store, but both Chi's have managed to chew the edges into very sharp little edges. None of the plastic has ever been chewed completly off, so it's safe that way. I'm planning on getting them all this type of plastic bowls now for eating and drinking.

If they eat from a combination of these, just choose one.

oh, and they all play with the bowls during the day. Elle will go get Sheba's out ot the kitchen to chew on. It's cute to see her carry it and try to go up her sofa stairs with it blocking her view. LOL

And when they're hungry, Roman and Elle will go get their bowls and chew on them to let me know if't chow time! :w00t: Are they're any other pups who play with the bowls?

Barbara, I have something to share and this is for everyone, but please don't quote me on this. A breeder told me this and I haven't actually found out whether it's true or not. I still just take the extra precaution. She has a lab that was feeding off plastic dishes for a few years until she discovered there was something wrong with his nose. Brought him to the vet and the vet said he had some bacterial infection. In the end, the vet concluded it must have been from the plastic dishes because they are attractions to bacteria, especially if they're worn down. Anyway, the lesson she was giving me was not to use plastic ware for Loppi... Can't remember her exact words but she said something about her lab's nose being on medication for the rest of his life or SOMETHING of that sort. Basically, he couldn't be cured completely.

Anyone know anything about this? I know there's something like this that applies to human beings. Water bottles.. it's been said to never reuse them because bacteria builds up and people get infected. It's rare but serious.

Just thought I'd share this because it sounded like a huge concern to the breeder.

Anyway, Loppi eats from stainless steel and silverware. When I first brought her home, she was scared of her own reflection in the bowls. LOL. So she hurriedly picked all the kibbles out and ate from the floor before the hairy monster could get to her. She knows now!

Hercules and Hummer have a plastic bowl that their dry food is in (which they rarely eat out of) and I feed them everyday on paper plates seperately. I had a bunch of cheap, thin, paper plates and so I started to use them. It works fine.. Hummie is such a crazy little dog when it comes to eating. Every morning our routine is the same I put food out, and sit down on the floor, he jumps around his plate barking, then goes and gets a toy and plays with it.. then comes back and I've usually put a few morsels on the floor to tempt him.. once he starts eating his food and gets close enough to his plate to eat off it I get up off the floor and leave him to eat alone.

My chi's drink from plastic containers and eat from human glass bowls or plates, we have designated all the saucers in the house to the chi's because we never use them and they are the perfect chi size:) .
Nini won a new plate about 2 weeks ago and it has his name printed on it, I love it and im trying to find somewhere where I could get more of them with each dogs name on it. Here is a pic of the new bowl:
(I know it says Nini but Biff has decided that its his LOL)

Hi Loppi's mom, I can tell you that there is something like this for humans, when I was in training for dental nursing we did a few experiments with leaving bacteria on plastic, glass, metal, etc, anyway when left for a few days the bacteria build up on all the items was the same, when cleaning/sterilising the items the bacteria was the hardest to get rid of on the plastic items... this is why in the dental industry most plastic items are disposable or covered.
I think you cannot clean human water bottles properly because you cant wipe the inside of the bottle properly.
But if you ask me im sure it would be fine to use plastic for pet bowls with dry food, and still fine to use plastic with wet food and water as long as you cleaned the container often. Anyone feel free to correct me if im wrong here.
I use plastic containers (like chinese food containers) for my chi's water bowls and wash them thouroughly every day and have had no problems.

Gracie and Sammi Girl eat from those heavy ceramic bowls that you use in cages for hamsters or ferrets. We don't leave the bowls out. They eat and the bowls are washed and put away. We use the same type of bowl but bigger for the water for the dogs and cats. We have 3 bowls of water in the living room and one bowl of water in the bedroom. I like these bowls because they are heavy and cannot tip over when some critter runs by them.:p

Two of my best loved sounds are: 1. dogs lapping water. 2. Sammi's tail thwapping when she is happy and wagging it against something. Gracie's tail is too short to thwap.:p

Hi all,
H&T only eat out of either glass or stainless steel bowls/dishes because many breeders/exhibitors/veterinarians believe that plastic bowls somehow can cause a "dudley" nose, or lack of pigmentation in certain dogs. Also, if the plastic is chewed, frayed, or has scratched surfaces, it can harber harmful bacteria. While eating, sensitive noses can scratch across the raised surface and create tiny openings for the bacteria to enter. I'm not sure what exactly the Lab supposedly had, but I do know that there are certain bacteria that animals are suseptable to and may require continuous treatment and it sounds familiar...

Loppi's Mom and Lys, thanks for the information. Since you posted this, they have not had plastic. It really makes sense, so I threw their plastic bowls out right away. That nose problem sounds awful! Even though I wash them well daily, I know there's no way I could totally clean out the chewed edges. I knew about the drinking water bottles and not to reuse them, but didn't think that could be for the dogs too. I know some plastic has anit-bacterial stuff in them, but I'm sure what my Chi's have done to their bowls is not considered normal wear and tear. LOL

We've always washed them and store them on a small table that has a small shelf about a foot off the floor in the middle of the legs.

Lila and Penny's bowl sounds darling! I'll have to check out ABC Dist. again. Sheba has a ceramic dish in the shape of bone, and it came with a placemat with a design of a set table (from Avon) Time to bring that out again.

Faye, we have water bowls in the livingroom and bedroom too. The lapping sound is cute. They all have their own pattern too, sometimes 3 laps and pause, sometimes 4 or 5 laps, depending on how hard they've played.

Terri, Wow, how fun to win that. That's a cute bowl for Nini (I mean Biffs, LOL LOL).

Renata, We used your idea for now and the Chi's have had picnics on cheap paper plates. NOw we just have to pick them up right away, since Elle loves to eat paper. LOL

Their own pattern... that is so true. What I want to know is how many laps equal a thwap. :p

HA HA HA Thwap! :w00t:

The thwap sounds so cute. My Chi's tails don't thwap. Roman's is a gentle whispwoosh with all the hair when he's in a lovie mood and more of a fast thwisp when he's excited.

Elle's boings since it's a very curled tail off to one side and sometimes no pattern to it--rather sporadic (sp?).

We took care of two lovely German Shepards one Christmas. They thwaped all my antique Christmas angels my Grandma painted off my coffee table. But at least they ended in happy thwaps by puppers. lol

Sammi Girl being a deer-head chi, has this long straight tail like a little dalmation type tail. She gets so excited when she is in a kissy mood that she thwaps it against the leather couch really loudly. Then Gracie has to come running to see what the thwapping is about. When she sees Sammi thwapping away she gets jelous and jumps up on the couch too. But all Gracie can do is wag her short little curly tail silently. She has a tail that curls up over her hip like a pug tail. However, she can get that tail unfurled and going really really fast when she wants to.It's the small things in life that make me really happy. Or should I say "thwappy".:-P

Thwappy-that is a great one! and you're right Faye, it is the small things in life!

We keep a small glass of water in the bedroom and every night as we are settling in, Tally jumps down and gets a drink-it is so cute and I love that it is her little nigh-night ritual.

Just a few words about this bacteria-thing.

My cat used to eat from plastic and kept getting this swollen lip.
It was a cross between a big coldsore/zit.
The vet finally said it was from plastic after she had a few of them.
Debra-Faye had to have cortosone shots to help her body heal them and when we took the plastic away she never got another one.

Casey will not eat by her dish. She carries her food up 13 stairs to the bedroom one piece at a time.... If someone is down stairs with her she begs to eat on their lap. Lucky people!
