Nini developed a lump on his groin area, I took him to the vet yesterday to check out what is wrong. He has been diagnosed with an inguinal hernia. :cry2:
What that means is there is a tiny natural opening within the muscle in that area.
He needs an operation to repair it. I completely trust my vet to do this and he is very knowledgable and has let me borrow a book with heaps of info in it.
Im going to take a week of in the beginning of October to take Nini in for his surgery and Pascha in for her spay and pelvis xrays.

Has anyone else has encountered this before or knows of any other animal that has had this surgery before.
From what I have read about it, it seems like the same as what a human would get ??

Hi Terri, I'm sorry to hear Nini has to have surgery, but I'm glad you have a wonderful vet who will take good care of him. I hope he's not in any discomfort with this. Keep us posted on the date of the opertion and how he's doing.

Thanks Faye and Barb  Nini thanks you both for your hugs and kisses:wub:

Nini is doing very well, the lump has been tested and is just fatty tissue, so Nini will be fine :) but he still needs to have the operation so that it doesnt happen again with a worse outcome, and I dont want to take any chances.
Pascha and Nini can hold each others paws on surgery day:)

Thanks Renata and Sharon:wub:

I was able to talk to someone who's dog has had this surgery and was bouncing around the next day like nothing happened, lets hope that Nini does the same.
Its so hard not to worry about them though - they are just so small and innocent. oh and not forgetting that im a just a worrier at heart LOL

terri, I don't blame you one bit for being worried. Is it a hernia AND fatty tissue? I'm just wondering because my dogs have had fatty tissue(tumors) and none of them have ever needed surgery and nothing ever became bad with them.

Can you tell me more about your dogs tumors, I wouldnt want Nini to have surgery if he didnt need it.
The vet described it as a hole in the muscle that parts of the body get trapped in, Nini had some fatty tissue trapped in his and the lump was huge but went away in a day and a half. The vet said he wants to close the hole up because there is a chance that it could happen again and some important part of his internal body might get stuck there causing serious problems. I dont want to take any chances of it happening again or any chances that could leave Nini in serious trouble, but also I dont want him to have a general anaesthetic if he didnt need it ?? OK now im confused LOL

Hi Terri, Oh I see. I wasn't sure if the problems were two totally different ones. I was the confused one. LOL Nini's problem is different than the ones my dogs had...totally different. :) And also, my pups were age related.

Nini's sounds like it's very mportant to correct. Hugs to Nini.

Thanks Bev:wub:

Nini is doing fine, he doesnt even know he has a problem, but he is liking all the extra attention and spot body inspections he is getting from me making sure that there are no more lumps LOL.

His operation is in 2 weeks from today, Pascha is having her operation on the same day and Biff is having his 3rd vaccination injection on the same day too! Stephan is flying in from work the night before so he can be here for it all which is good because I dont know how I would handle 3 dogs at the vet at the same time by myself LOL

Oh my goodness-three dogs at the vet at one time, you are brave! Seriously though, you all will be in our thoughts for safe surgeries and quick recoveries.

I've looked up all I can about inguinal hernias and so far the most I can find about them is that they are often an inherited disease passed on in bloodlines. The good news is that they are not considered a very difficult surgery to repair. I'll keep searching...

inherited disease passed on in bloodlines  Busty is Nini's son, I will have to keep a close eye on Busty.
Thank you so much Lys:wub:

It was pretty stupid of me to breed Pascha and Nini, I had no idea about hereditary traits or anything, I thought it would be great to have pups but I didnt really know then what I know now. I put myself at the same level as backyard breeders. I do love Busty and Im very glad that we have him and I would never change the fact that we have him but im also glad that I found this place and thanks to all here I have become more educated in chi's and breeding etc to now know better and leave it to the experts.

I've found that the more I seem to think that I know about a subject, the more questions I have and that much more I don't know! CC has taught me SO much about chihuahuas and sharing the information that I learn both here and from other places has really enlightened me-I'm just glad that others feel the same way! More importantly, Nini should be just fine and so should Busty now that you know what to look for!
Lys
PS-I am SO excited but SO scared to breed Tally here soon. I am definately NOT an expert, but with the help of a few long-time breeders, LOTS of research into the bloodlines, and a good vet, I'm hoping to produce a litter of healthy puppies. A show dog would be icing on the cake!

Lys you are the most perfect breeder/exhibitor, and anyone fortunate enough to have one of your puppies would be extrememly lucky to be able to deal with such a professional and knowledgable chi person. Tally is also very lucky to be in the care of such a wonderful breeder, she is going to be the most pampered and cared for chi mom ever. It is exciting to know Tally is going to be having puppies one day, they are going to be gorgeous pups:smile:

I'm blushing!!! Thank you SO much for the vote of confidence and kind words Terri! I only hope that I can live up to them! I'll sure try!

As for Tally having puppies, I can't wait but am scared to put her through the birth since chihuahuas often need c-sections. Her breeder and Max (who has her other sister) think that I should go ahead and just schedule a c-section and I'm nervous about her having to go under the knife. My vet wants to Ultrasound her about a week before she is due and measure the pups head's against her pelvic opening to see if free whelping is possible. We'll see I guess-I just don't anything to happen to my little girl! But I can't wait for puppies!!!

nini and Pascha are ok:) The vet was wonderful and said the operations went very well, nini needs checking over in a few days to make sure its going to plan. Pascha's spay went well too.

The vet is so nice and he and his wife sung to Nini and Pascha all day (I love this vet!), there is a south african song with the words nini-buba-nini in it and they sing it to Nini whenever he goes to the vet, its a lullaby meaning goodnight baby.

Nini and Pascha are pretty sore and feeling very sorry for themselves. They have stacks of medication to keep them happy, but are just picking at their food and snoozing. Poor babies:cry2:

Nini and Pascha say thanks for all your concern, they are loving the extra attention.
Thanks again everyone, its wonderful to have your support and care in times like these,
hugs to you all:wub:

Awww! I wish a doggie cookie would would help them feel better; I'd send them one each. Probably by the end of the day they will feel so good, they will make themselves sore forgetting and jumping about and continue doing that with rest. That's what Roman did anyway. They say to keep them quiet. How do you keep a cheerful Chi quiet? LOL  I'm so glad you have a great vet like ours. I hope you're OK as well. know they will feel better very soon. And with meds, all the better. I am sending head pets and chi hugs all the way to them right now.

Thank you Barb:wub:
I know its going to be hard to keep those two quiet! LOL
Pascha is not allowed to jump for 2 weeks - thats going to be easy because she loves to be carried around and cuddled all day.
Nini is allowed to walk around and the vet said he will heal better and faster if we let him move around.

Busty and Biff are crying because they want to play with them, we got them a couple of new toys and bones to keep them occupied for a while;-)
