I was examining Loppi a few days earlier and I felt a bump near her hind legs. I looked at it and it looked like something of a mosquito bite.. it was light pink, but she wasn't scratching it, so I didn't think it was anything bad. I checked again today, it's worsened. It's red now and feels bigger. Does anyone know what this might be? It doesn't seem to be bothering her. I'll be checking in with her vet.

HI Kathy, I hope Loppi's alright. I think it could be many things from a little poke from a stick or grass while playing outdoors, to a bug bite, a hot spot, ingrown hair, etc. Have you put any Neosporin ointment on it? That could help it's healing. Let us know what the vet says, and I hope it doesn't get any worse. Chi hugs to Loppi. :flower: :flower:

I'd give it a few days and just watch it to see if it gets better or worse. More than likely, its just an insect bit and all your vet will do is possible give her a steriod shot to ease the swelling but it probably doesn't need it really. Hope it goes away soon!

She went to see a vet today..not her regular vet, but the other one that she occasionally sees because her regular vet is all booked up until this coming Friday. Anyway, the vet said that this is due to growth spurts in small dogs, something about antihistamine. Anyone know about this? She said that I should schedule Loppi to have the bump removed before it gets any worse..this will require anesthetic and surgery.. to a total of $325 CDN. She didn't seem to know too much about this and said that Loppi's bump should be removed and then sent to the lab to see what it is exactly. Doesn't sound too convincing to me and I'm still not satisfied. I don't want to put Loppi thru anesthetic without knowing the whole deal because what if I spend all this money on the surgery to find out that it wasn't necessary to remove it? I have her booked in this coming Friday and we'll see what her regular vet says. :(

UPDATE: Well, I managed to book her in for an earlier appointment, so we went this afternoon to see her regular veterinary. She said the same thing- that we first have to remove it and then send it in to the labs to test. She said it could be cancerous, but it's a good thing that it's still on the small side and she can grab the whole lump in her fingers :cry2: I'm supposed to book her in for the surgery sometime soon, but the main problem is that I cannot afford $300 right now with my large sum of university fees coming up and I currently lost my part-time job. I'm going to perhaps try to get a loan somewhere quickly and hopefully that works.. I don't think I have a long enough credit history for them to approve of a loan of any kind, but I will try. I really want the best for Loppi and it's just so sad that this had to have happened at a time when money is tight for me. Keep your fingers crossed :(

Kathy, Thanks for the update on Loppi. Sorry you two have to go through this. I hope it's not cancerous. It's at such a bad time for you too. It never fails a vet bill pops up at tight times. I sure know how that is. Luckily, our vet lets us charge. Would that be an option with your veterinarian? There seems to be less who do this for people; I wish more would.
Roman went through a similar thing:
One day in March, we noticed a round hard bump on Roman's boney ankle. It really looked like a tumor the size of a small pea, the hair was not on it, and it scared me to death because it was strange the way it appeared out of no where so fast; we're always massaging and checking him out, so we knew it hadn't been there for long at all, if even a day. We didn't have the money to take him to the vet right at that time since we have a bill there now as it is, and he wasn't in pain, and I hoped it would go away thinking he had got a splinter of some sort. I kept Neosporin on it for probably a month, watched it very close and of course would have taken him if I had felt he needed to go. It finally started getting smaller and now it's gone completely. So maybe Roman's was what you mentioned with growth spurts in small dogs. It sure didn't look or feel like anything that would go away on it's own.
Did they rule out that it could still be that growth spurt bump, or do they have to do the operation even to determine that?
Oh, I am so sorry. I have never heard of this strangely because we have been through almost everything it seems. My grandma's cocker spaniel has these lump type things on her and they have come up in more spots as she has gotten older. My grandma has had them checked many times and they are nothing really. I cannot remember what they had told her they were though....sorry. I don't know what to say b/c as a chi Mommy I know that I take mine in on the littlest things too and worry tremendously. If both vets want to remove it, it may not be a bad idea. Do you think that they will set up a payment plan for you? I hope things go well and I am sorry I don't have more info for you. Have you looked online for more info? That may be an idea also. Lys may have more info also too.

Barbara, maybe the bump you described on Roman was what Loppi had in the beginning but assuming that perhaps she got the bump from her vaccines (I remember that's about the area that her shots go in), I never really worried much about it. I did keep a mental note on it and would check every so often, but it always stayed the same size and never seemed to hurt or bother her. No itching either. However, just the past half month alone, it has grown tremendously and it's started to grow red and swell up. It's also started to itch her at sudden times, causing her a little startle. Her regular vet has not mentioned anything about a growth spurt, so I'll be going ahead with the laser surgery to remove the lump.
Mandi, are the lump type things on your grandma's Cocker Spaniel called fatty tumors or something of that sort? I think I've heard about them before and it's common in older dogs...completely harmless though.
I've asked both vets if they would allow me to work out a payment plan with them, but they both said that they don't do that at their clinics, but did refer me to something called the MediCard, which finances veterinary fees and other medical procedures such as cosmetic surgery. I'm going to fill out that form when I get a hold of one and fax it in as soon as possible.
Thanks a lot guys for being so caring! I'll keep you posted when something new comes up!

Hi There
Casey has a small bump on her neck area just above her R front leg.
It is losing hair and just stays the same size. I showed her to a Chi-Expert at a rescue event for Chihuahua's and she felt it could be from a shot or a sebacious cyst. She told me that one of her dogs had one just like it and she had it removed but never got a good difinitive explanation of what it was. It wasn't however cancer.
I have started the Bacitracin ointment and will continue for a while. It has been there for a month or so and doesn't change. If it grows or changes shape she will be right to the vet.
Good luck with Loppi

I don't remember but I thought it was something else. I think they called Lucius's lump on his side a fatty tumor. My grandparents are on vacation right now and will be back in a couple days, I will ask her when they get back. It will bother me now anyway, lol.
