Hercules and Hummer both snort and honk! I think Hummer is the champion snorter and honker around our house!

Whenever my Shorty gets really excited or happy he'll start snorting and coughing like he can't catch his breath... so what is honking??

HI MissNida, Chi owners just call it different things--I've also heard it called reverse sneezing. 8)

HeHe Renata, You have a little band with a honker and a snorter! :w00t:

I'm very surprised Elle doesn't do it since Roman does. She gets very concerned for Roman--she gets very concerned and scared. And the way Roman closes his eyes when he does it, I think it hurts him or gives him a headache.

I have to change my vote to both honkers! Elle had her first honk concert at 3 am this morning. She wasn't bothered by it, but we were worried for her on how she'd take it. Roman woke up and checked her out. It ran it's course, and she went right back to sleep. I was wide awake though!

I voted "yes" both Heuser and Tally honk... Heuser does it when he is excited or on a walk/in grass (he's allergic). Tally also does it when she is excited, but also whenever me or Matt (or anyone else) put on perfume/cologne. Silly Wawatwosies-that's why I my signature used to say "The Honkie Kids"!!!

Basically, many toy breeds make a honking/snorting sound due to their trachea rings collapsing in on themselves. Since they have been bred down to be so tiny, their rings tend to be more oval then the usual round shape, thus "honking" occurs as they collapse and the dog tries to breath. It is not considered dangerous and perfectly normal for chihuahuas, yorkies, maltese, etc. Try rubbing the dog's neck right below the jawline to stimulate swallowing, or hold their nostril's shut until they force a breath of air out through their mouths-this often opens the airway and helps them to breath. Tally does better if I pick her up and tilt her head up so her nose is in a straight line with her throat.
Hope this helps, there is tons of info on the web about it too...
