When you take a trip or holiday, what do you do with your pets?

I voted other. I've left Hercules once with my best friend and her dog, Ginger. I thought Hercule would be just fine because he loves Kathy and Ginger.. but he turned into a completely different dog the moment I left. The next time I took him with me to Florida. That plane trip was interesting, but I was so glad to have him with me.
Other than that.. I haven't gone anywhere. I hope that if I ever can't take them it will be easier since they have each other now.

Well we've never traveled anywhere since getting the little one's. But if we did, my aunty would watch them and I know she'd take good care of them. Other than them probably gaining some weight I know they'd be in really good hands. When we did go on a trip a few years ago, Kekoa, Pomaika'i and Poops (he doesn't live here but came down everyday for chow) got fed by our neighbor, and then my ex sister-in-law stopped by everyday and just cruised around with the dogs and sewed. Pomai was super super pissed we left her too! She knew we were leaving, and when we got back she totally shafted us!

hello all,
I am new here but I have some questions...
I have a teacup chi, she is a doll her name is Diva. Anyways, I have two jobs and one requires that I spend the night at it twice a week... this would mean leaving my chi alone for exceptionally long periods of time. My question is will that have an ill affect on her and what are some options to the situation... any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I would be up for getting another chi but I don't know how soon I could do that or if it would even help her with her loneliness.
Thanks,

Hi dp, Welcome to Clubchi and so glad you found us to help with your questoins. There's a lot of people who can help.
Well, here is only my opinion; others have more or different advice as well. :) I don't think a Chihuahua should ever be left alone for exceptionally long periods of time. Chi's are companion dogs. :) I would get a pet sitter to come in, or take my Chi to one. Chihuahuas are like little infant babies who need constant care and human interaction. Another thing you can do is board Diva at a veterinarian's office or a trusted boarding kennel. We have used our vet for this purpose while attending weddings, funerals, parties, etc. A lot of dog (all breeds) owners now take their dogs to doggie day care centers. There are members here who work daily and they will have advice as to what they do for the 8 hours. I would not get a second Chi for this reason since there's much more to loniness of a Chi left alone. Some members take their Chi to work with them. For now, make sure Diva can't get to any power cords. The best well behaved Chi/any dog can chew anything within seconds of being left alone. they are smart and know the minute we walk out of the room, they can run and tear up the box of Kleenex, or chew computer cables, eat poisonous house plants, eat the stuffing from pillows and choke our get their tiny intestine clogged with anything they eat. We watch them watch us, and if they think we are not there, they go at it. LOL Get some baby safety plugs to stick in electrical outlets. Please let us know how it works out for you and Diva. Any pictures of the sweet Diva? We love pics. :) ~Barb

Well, I'm a real stick in the mud - I don't travel anywhere so Gracie and Sammi have never been alone except when I am at work. Even then I go home for lunch so they are never alone for more than six hours at a time. If I did need to be away from home I would board them at the vet. In the past I have always boarded my cats at the vet as I like to know that if they got sick they would already be at the vet where they are already known.
However, I do want to go to the Westminster Kennel Club Show next year and stay over one night in NYC. I could take Sammi and Graci with me to a hotel that lets you bring dogs. But I don't think I want to subject them to riding on the train into Manhattan and staying alone in a strange hotel when I am at the show. Maybe the vet for two days and one night would be less stressful.
Any thoughts...

Faye, I would love to go to the Westminster Show. You reminded me of something funny I saw on TV two years ago. Joy Bahar on THE VIEW went to that show, but found out dogs were not allowed. She thought too bad, she'll take her miniature breed with her, so she snuck it in (Yorkie, I think?). She made it in just fine, but on the way out she was grabbed by security and pulled into a room where they accused her of stealing a show dog. It took quite a bit to convince them it was hers and to leave with her dog. lol lol

I saw that segment. She was so surprised that you couldn't take a dog to a dog show. :-)

Thank you so much for your input! I have about another month before I have to come up with something concrete but I have a friend who has 3 poms that said she would watch her and my brother also offered so hopefully that will solve the problem! I really appreciate all of your responses... I have been worried sick about this move. Thanks again and as soon as I figure out how to make my pics smaller I will get them on here. I tried earlier today but the website said they were too large. I am working on it though!
Sincerely,
Me & Diva

My chi has flew with me in the cabin to NY 3x already and she is just turning 3 years old. I take the redeye, so she just sleeps in her crate as she would sleep at home during those hours, only at home, she is in bed with me. I stay at my mom's there.
When I go on weekend getaways in my own state, I take her to hotels that accept dogs, not that I always say she is there. They charge $10 per day or so for a dog. My trips are centered around parks on the Pacific coast and beaches where she loves to do hikes.
dpoccdr, there is no such thing as a teacup chihuahua. You will never go to a show and hear a show dog person with a small chihuahua call them teacups. Chihuahuas are usually from 2-6 pounds, which is the standard size. Teacup is a term used by breeders to charge more for the dog. A small chihuahua is just a small chihuahua. The only other kind of chihuahua there is are long haired.

No, the proper term is called LONG COAT, not haired.
