Hi Folks....Why is it that Chico & Mitzie turn rabid if I try to clip their nails....Oreo doesn't mind the actual nail clipping but it's just that he wiggles when I'm holding him....like a little boy getting his first haircut. So many people tell me I should get a Dremel (sp?) and use it on all my doggies  ARE YOU KIDDING!!!??? The sound of it would really get me ripped up by my guys *TEETH* My vet always tell's me to feel free to stop by the hosp. (no need for an appointment) when my guys need a trim.....well that's all fine and good but I can't drive and have a VERY HARD TIME finding a ride. Mitzies nails are really bad and she's the most wild one of the bunch  Any ideas??

I take mine to groomer or vet to have this done because they dont hold still and also have black nails which are hard to see the quick. Do you have a groomer near you or check around my be some one lives near you that can do this.

Elle is the worst with having her nails trimmed--sweet little thing goes rabid like yours Anne. http://pages.prodigy.net/indianahawkeye/newpage11/9.gif Luckily she has never biten us. I work with her every day by placing the clippers on her paws and with no intention of clipping them during these times. She seems to be getting better. :? http://pages.prodigy.net/indianahawkeye/newpage11/9.gif I'd take her to a groomer, but I'm sure she'd act the same way there. LOL She needs more work. Roman doesn't like it, but will let me trim his when Terry is vaccuming, or I turn it on. It must take his mind off of what I'm doing, because he usually runs and hides under the bed when the vaccume in on.

As for ideas, I'm thinking of getting some sheets of sand paper, strapping it to my leg wile I eat, so when they stand up and scratch my leg, it will take care of a few nails anyway. http://pages.prodigy.net/indianahawkeye/newpage11/9.gif Also when I've taken them for walks, I've noticed the cement wears them down quite a bit especially when Roman tries to go see other dogs, he starts barking and peeling out--this takes care of all but the du claws. http://pages.prodigy.net/indianahawkeye/newpage11/9.gif

I'm very blessed to have puppers that don't really give me any problems. But maybe they've had a bad experience with having their nails trimmed before coming to your home, or maybe they just really don't like it. :x
Barb, your sand paper idea is great!! I laughed and laughed at the thought of that one!
Anne, when we had our rabbit we'd wrap him in a pillow case or towel and stick his paw out so he wouldn't wiggle so much. That was our most effective way with him. Maybe you could try doing that??

Sometimes people would bring a MILD little pill to me to give their dogs and cats so I could groom them with clippers and trimmers. It made the babies very happy. http://pages.prodigy.net/indianahawkeye/newpage09/20.gif Your vet would give you one for each of your babies so you could do it yourself. I may have to do that for Elle because hers need trimming.

 I may have already told this story  but it's really funny. The first time I took *4* pound Mitzie to the vet for a check-up....I pleaded my vet to trim Mitzies nails....and I *TOLD* him she turns into Cujo if you try to do her nails....well....he gives a little chuckle...probably thinking how much harm can a 4 pound dog do....but either so I still wanted to warn him. So he left the room with Mitzie.... I just sat down and waited.....and waited.....and waited....for 10 minutes....then the door opens and my vet had looked like he been thru the wringer...beads of sweat on his forehead and gasping for air....and Mitzie had this evil grin on her face  I told the vet I warned him  BUT her nails WERE TRIMMED!!!!

 Are you kidding??? Mitzie would haffta be in a coma before you could do her nails!! I've heard from many Chi owners I know that *THEIR* babies trim their own nails!!! :? By biting them.....I wish my guys would do that!!!!

Barb,
I love your idea of strapping sand paper to your legsLOL Hummer is really bad about scratching her little claws on my legs! Even after they have been trimmed!

Heuser and Tally are pretty good about it-Tally squirms a little but not to bad...I always clip them right after their weekly bath so that the nails are soft and easy to clip through...Also, I take an actual emery board (for humans) and file down each nail right before a show-it takes awhile but gives them nice, smooth, short nails...I am looking for a smaller nail grinder-the Dremel is too big for their paws...
