View Full Version : I sewed my first dress today!
Today I was determined to learn to sew. So I got my Mothers machine out, went to get fabric, and here is my first dress. :)

I tried it on, and it fits me perfect. Thank you Patty!
Oh, and I won't be taking up sewing. Boy is that time consuming. And it's certainly not the easiest thing. LOL I just wanted to see if I could do it. :)

Congratulations! You have joined the Chi Club sewing circle. That is so cute. You did a great job. I love the pink material and the daisy border. The little sheer skirting is brilliant. I love anything Daisy so you got me hooked on your first dress immediately.
Hehe, you say you won't be taking up sewing now, but just wait, it's so addicting. It is definately time consuming and not as easy as it first appears but it is so much fun, and the more you make the better you get. I'll be looking for your next design soon.
You really did a fantastic job.

Thank you Twyla! Sewing requires a lot of patience, and that I don't have. I had to know if I could do it. But getting the seems straight, and doing everything exactly the way it should be done is to tedious for me. I started to put it in the microwave to see if that would nuke it done. I saw the project through, and my sewing days are done. My hat is off to you ladies that sew. I can appreciate your skills, and the time you put into it.

Thank you Megan! I didn't try it on Lexie, guess we'll have to see which one it fits better. That is the second time I've ever touched a sewing machine. The first was in highschool. Now I remember why I didn't continue that path. I have a new respect for those that sew.

Adorable. Better than anything I could have done. Only sewing machine I ever touched was one for a small child my Mom bought me when I was 9. I never did figure out how to use it! lol

That is so cute and dainty. I love how the little daisy trim compliments the fabric and the floofy pink edge is so cute. Does it fit Lexie or is it Gia's first dress?

I was expecting to see a "human" sized dress. LOL. I thought to myself, 'GREAT! Now someone can sew me a dress!!' ROFL! I thought this could benefit me, but I don't even think my foot would be able to fit in there. It would be a cute accessory! Good job! I think you're a natural. I can't wait to see what you come up with next.

its beautiful Teresa! I love the daisy's .... i have such a thing for daisy's they are probably one of my favouritest flowers! that is gonna look super cute on Lexie or Gia!
great job!
And as was mentioned above the only sewing machine i ever touched was a little children's one... and i also couldnt figure out how to operate it@!
although i did some embroidery that i wasnt too bad at!

Thanks Tiffany! I had one of the children's machines when I was a young girl, but I never played with it.

Thanks Faye! I was so tired last night, I didn't try it on Lexie. But it looks like it will fit her, so Gia can't wear it for awhile. My intention was to make it for Gia since store bought clothes won't fit her yet. Being the first one I made, I'm not good at doing sizes yet. I don't expect I'll be making enough to ever figure it out.
awww its so cute, love the color and the fringe
Thanks Cassie! The fringe was the hardest part. It's on an elastic edge. Not fun to sew your first time.

Girl, I did good to do that teeny one. I could just see me trying to make human sized clothes. I might have an arm hole sewn into the neck opening.
If I ever get good enough, I'll make you a dress. :flower: Thanks Jen!

Thanks Lee-Anne! I thought the fabric was so cute! I loved the colors as well. Sewing isn't easy, or for me it wasn't. Not hard, just time consuming, and tedious. I have another piece of material that I need to make something with, then my career is over.
Wow nice job!! I def dont have the patience either LOL
Thanks Shana! Maybe they'll invent a one touch garment machine for us that don't have patience.
wow i love it, its beautiful!! You did an excellent job. DO much more!!! :)
Thanks Shon! I don't know if being a seamstress is my calling.
Well, I tried it on Lexie, and it fits her, so other than the length being okay for Gia, it isn't going to fit her for awhile. Oh well, I tried. I might be able to do some adjustments, we'll see. I made it 4 inches long, so at least I got that part right for Baby G. I'm sure before long they'll be able to share it.
Here is the other fabric I have, and pictures of Lexie wearing the dress.
What is a good pattern to use? I had to make this pattern myself. Maybe that's why I'm not doing good on the sizes.

That looks really good Teresa, and I love the color, trim combination you used. You should have seen some of the first harnesses I made....they didn't look half as good as your first one. :flower:

Thank you Megan! She actually pranced around in it like she wanted everyone in the house to see how pretty she was in the dress Mommy made her.

Thank you Jane! I had to know if it was something I could even come close to doing. Not knowing anything about a sewing machine, or sewing, I was afraid it would be a flop. The ruffled trim has an elastic edge, so that wasn't the easiest thing to work with for my first time. I think with a pattern, and some patience, I might be able to make a few here and there. I don't think I could ever sit still long enough to make enough to sell.

Thank you Barb! :)
My Mom used to sew some before she lost her sight. I wish I would have spent some time watching her closer. I've always done better at things that I can get up and move around some. But maybe now that I'm older, I can at least teach myself how to sew a little. I think now I could at least hem some pants, or things like that. Alteration shops charge about 20 dollars for just simple pant hems, so I'm glad I took the time to get some-what acquainted with the sewing machine.

Teresa,
I think you did a wonderful job for your first dress! Lexie looks adorable in it! I think your being way too hard on yourself, you did a fine job!

Thank you Renata! It's so easy to find flaws in things we do ourselves. I'm going to work on the next one next week. I won't be using a trim with an elastic edge though. It's almost impossible to keep it from stretching as you sew.
