When we got Diego he was paper trained, newspaper on pads, etc. We at first placed his crate in the kitchen, and paper beside it etc. He did very well. Then we moved his crate to the living room because we have french doors going out to a large deck (we are in a condo) and placed his puppy pad there.. hoping I'd get him to go outside on papers on the deck. Well the training him to go outdoors isnt going very well at all! He's scared even if the wind blows the paper!!! And our winters up here are crazy brutal cold. I wouldnt force him to go out anyways. (He is 5 months by the way)
I don't mind so much cleaning up after him 3 times a day or more.. and the floor is laminate so easy to clean.. and he never has accidents ( few drip drips.. wet pee paw prints, etc.) but now I'm wondering if I should move his crate and pee pads back to the kitchen. Originally when we first got him he was in a nice corner in the kitchen. I'd really rather not look at him doing his business and puppy pads while I'm relaxing. Or will this totally screw him up?? Will he feel like he's in trouble if I move his "bed" or "den" to the kitchen? We are in a small condo.. so it's not like he has far to go to come find me on the couch.
I would try to be consistent with everything until he is well trained. Moving things to much will get him confused. Hope everything gets better. It just takes some time.

yep.. gotta stay consistent.. besides if i move his den now, he'll probably think we banished him. So... i just called a pet store and I think I'm going to invest in a puppy pad tray... hopefully he wont notice the difference. We use puppy pads AND newspaper.. (to try to stretch the puppy pad a little longer than every pee) but its sometimes runs, drips, etc. This should help with the cleanup!! They are like $30! ouch

I agree with staying consistent. I would certainly be confused if my toilet kept moving around! ROFL! ;)

The tray may help some. I know I've read it makes it less messy. Also some have had luck with it stopping shredding. The pads get expensive, using the newspaper too is a good idea. I found a website where I order them cheaper than I can find them here local. I'll look for it, and post it for you. I agree, $30 is steep. Did you look on eBay?

Thanks for the links.. however.. I'm in Canada.. so no free shipping :???: I could consider the Amazon.com site.. I've never purchased from them again.. but then yes.. more pricey shipping! arg.
I'm sorry, I didn't realize you were in Canada. Maybe there are some companies in your area that offer free shipping. If I come across any, I'll post them for you. :)

Good luck with finding some cheap pads but he is only young at 5 months and it will come all of a sudden! by 7 months I bet you have cracked it.My Teddy used to run in if the wind blew him but just take him out without the paper and stand and wait for him tell him wee wee and praise him its amazing how they soon know.

This is a double post.. but just thought I'd ask you chi experts here as well..
We pretty much had him crate trained at night.. put him in there.. "night-night", close the door,, then we head upstairs and not hear a peep.
Ever since my fiance brought him upstairs to wake me up in bed Sat. morning.. he's cried every night, and ALL night when we put him in his crate at night!! Do you really think he knows/remembers our bed upstairs?? What should I do??
We love him.. but really don't want him in our bed. Should we just persevere and keep doing what we are doing? or Should I move his crate into our bedroom?? (my fiance thinks that will be worse as he'll cry and scratch and we'll never sleep) or maybe he'll willingly go into his house at night and be comfy being able to see us.?? I really don't know what to do. I want to stay consistent!!!!!!!
I just thought I'd ask you Chi - Pro's your advice.

Well Sat. night we experimented and did not lock Diego up in his crate.. he has a favourite "nest" pillow near the couch so I put his blankey and toys on it and we put up the baby gate and went upstairs to sleep.... and no crying!! The locking him up must really freak him out!! Last night again.. no crying. He was all covered up when i came downstairs this morning. too cute.

Well I have to report that Diego got his way... partly. He did manage to weasle his way into our room.. He would just cry and scratch at the babygate so we brought his crate up to our bedroom and at night put him in, close the door and not a peep. At least he's not in the bed.. but we are all getting sleep.
However, he loves ripping up and down the stairs (he loves the traction he gets on the carpet) but he's been peeing up there. He never has accidents downstairs.. I really don't want to have pee pads up there too. Usually he is good if I am getting ready in the morning and can keep an eye on him, but that sneaky little fart will pee on the carpet the instant i turn my head.. so his upstairs privledges are suspended for now. haha. We will still take him up to bed in his crate but no more playing up there. I guess we'll hold off installing new carpets for awile!! :-?
