Hi Sandy,
Its good to hear from you, I hope your well.
My chi's have had fleas before and I did see some in the carpet, I used the flea stuff that you put on the back of their neck, the brand was Advantage and it had heatworm prevention in it as well. It worked so well that I havent seen a flea anywhere since and its been more than 6 months.
I remember after I used it on them someone posting about how toxic that flea treatment is, I think it might have been Lys who posted about it. I have not used it since because of that reason and because they havent had fleas since. Im not sure what to do if they get fleas again, im interested to know what others think about flea treatments.

Hi Sandy, hope all is well. I use Advantage on Sheba and let Roman and Elle ride her coat tails. (I don't put it on them.) I also rememeber a post of information by Lys on Advantage being bad for Chihuahuas, but can't find anything on the internet or anywhere regarding this. Maybe she has it still. :D
I started using Advantage 7 years, 4 months ago and haven't seen a flea since. I'll have to find something else for the Chis too, and I'll also need mosquito and tick as well.
If I find any information, I'll let you know.

Hey guys, glad I found this thread!
My post was about how Advantage and other, similar topical flea treatments are often fatal to developing puppies in the womb if applied to a pregnant bitch. Also, I said that I personally wouldn't want to apply it to my tiny kids since it is a toxin and I tend to lean to a more holistic approach to healing.
That being said, I think that if H&T did pick fleas up bad enough to have to treat, I would consider doing what Terri did and only apply it once, way before (or after) they were going to be bred (just in case of residual effects)...Fleas are such a few and far between problem in our house, I would hate to expose my kiddos to the chemicals on a monthly bases versus just treating them when an outbreak occurs.
There are many effective products out there that are one-time-use only including shampoos (Bio Groom Flea & Tick Shampoo is good), sprays (Bio Groom Flea & Tick Spray) and powders. Also, many holistic vets recommend supplementing your dogs diet with Garlic and Brewers Yeast because of their natural flea repelling properties.
Hope this helps, I'd ask your vet what he/she recommends as the most effective-if the fleas are contained to the dogs (and not your carpet/sofas/etc) then treating them should be fairly simple...
Good luck!
Lys

My two girls had a bad reaction to the Advantage but they tolerate Frontline very well. I only use it in the beginning of the summer. The box says it lasts more than one month. My new rescued kitty came with fleas and he got cat flea med that seems to have taken care of everyone here. Everyone both cats and both dogs will get flea med this weekend.

Hi Sandy, Vaccuming is so hard--sorry about your back--hope it's better soon. Where I've had such good luck with Advantage on Sheba, I'm going to give Advantix a try on Roman. I'll see if Elle can get by without it for a while.
When I had my grooming parlor, there were so many fleas! I had powder flying all the time! LOL I had one poor old dog who had hundreds of fleas. The owner had them in her grass in the city, so she had no control over them. she just wanted me to get rid of ((((some)))) of them. This was all before application treatments.

I use frontline on Naz and revolution on the cats... and haven't had any trouble yet....
*fingers crossed*
This is a copy and paste from the Cocker boards I belong to and this is a post a member there made in regards to the flea problem....
Don't panic! I have a remedy that willkeep them out of your house, and die quickly if they try to stick around.
Go to the grocery store and buy a box of Twenty Mule team Borax (in the laundry section if you don't know what it is). Sprinkle this all over your floors and underneath cushions on your sofa and chairs. Let it set for about 2 hours, then vacuum up. This really works!
I had 2 cats in North Carolina and nothing seemed to keep the fleas off of them. A firend of ours told us about this solution and we tried it (had to, hubby is allergic to fleas). We didn't see another flea for the longest time. When it happened again we would re-apply and it always has worked for us.
I would check with your vet before using this method just to be on the safe side & take the pets for a 2 hour ride or walk til the borax is cleaned up

I was reading that apple cider will repel fleas you can put a 1/4 cup in a gallon of water to drink and also spray them with it before going out side and when they come back from their walks heard its good for hot spots also. also read borax laundry detergent is good to sprinkle on carpets must leave it on 2 weeks it will kill fleas and larvac. I dont know if i could leave that around for 2 weeks

 Both Elle and Roman are like little vaccume cleaners, so I don't think the Borax would be too good around here.

Control & Treat dog fleas with Frontline
No Fleas Dog Biscuits (Treat), this recipe will help control, reduce or eliminate dog fleas. It is a great medicine against dog fleas of all kinds.
(If your dog has a yeast allergy, I would not suggest making this)
2 cups All-Purpose Flour
½ cup Wheat Germ
½ cup Brewers Yeast
1 tsp Salt
2 each Cloves Garlic, minced
3 tbs. Vegetable or Olive Oil
1 cup Chicken Stock (or any flavor you wish to use)
· Preheat oven to 400 F. Grease two to three baking sheets. Combine first four ingredients. In a large mixing bowl, combine garlic and oil. Slowly stir flour mixture and stock alternately into oil and garlic, beating well, until the dough is well-mixed. Shape dough into a ball. On lightly floured surface, roll out dough 12" thick. Using a 2" biscuit cutter, cut dough into rounds. Transfer biscuits to prepared baking sheets. Bake 20-25 minutes or until well browned. Turn off heat and allow biscuits to dry in oven for several hours or over night. Store in refrigerator or freezer. Makes about 26 biscuits.
