Hello everyone,

I have two Chi's one name Lola (almost 3 years in Dec) and Paco (just turned 1 Sept.) They both use a litter box lined with a pee pee pad indoors. They both are completely trained and use it faithfully. The only problem that I am having is that little Paco likes to snack on his poop (:mrgreen:yuck!) We even bought this powder from the Vet that you sprinkle on his food - and it does not stop him still. Sometimes he will even go as far as hiding some in his bed under his pillow. I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to curb this. I try to dispose of it quickly however when I am at work it is impossible to do. Does anyone else have this problem?

Thanks,

Lori

Sorry Lori, I can't help you with that, but I did want to welcome you to the forum. I'm sure someone on the forum has a similar experience. WELCOME!:flower:

My chis are pad trained. I had one chi, a female, who ate poo when she was very young. We were home more with her and we trained her not to do it by working very hard to distract her with a treat reward of using the pads and picking it up right away. She caught on that if she left the poo for us to pick up she would get a food treat.

I now have another one that eats my other dogs poo but not his own poo. I am not home as much and have found it impossible to be there to get him to stop, so far. :( I hope others here can give you some pointers.

Welcome to the forum! I am sorry to hear about Paco's problem. I googled it and I found a website with some interesting information. I hope it helps.

Why do dogs eat feces?

Coprophagy, or consuming feces, is common in domestic dogs. Dogs are scavengers, which means that anything can be considered food to a dog. Eating feces, although disgusting to us, is not disgusting to them, its food. They may simply be harvesting undigested food from the fecal material, whether it's their own or another animals. Coprophagy may be caused by a nutritional (thiamine or vitamin-B) or digestive enzyme deficiency in some dogs. This possibility should be discussed with your veterinarian.

Coprophagy may be a displacement or compulsive behavior in response to stress, frustration, or anxiety. A dog that is tied up in the back yard for many hours a day is lonely and frustrated. This often results in displacement behaviors such as barking, digging, and coprophagy. Coprophagy may also be an attention-seeking behavior, for example if the dog has learned that his/her owner comes flying out of the door in response, giving the dog that much needed attention (remember, even negative attention is attention to a dog).

It is even possible that coprophagy is a behavior the dog learned from its mother, since mom dogs consume the fecal material of their puppies. The puppies may learn to eat fecal material from watching her, or from the smell of it on her breath. If the puppy was raised in unsanitary conditions, the smell of feces may be associated with the smell of food since they may have often been side by side.

How do you stop coprophagy?

1. Switch to a high quality dog food to ensure your dog is getting proper nutrition.
2. Have your veterinarian test for nutritional deficiency.
3. Reduce the stress, frustration, or anxiety in your dog's life.
4. Remove your attention in response to the behavior.
5. Add meat tenderizer to your dog's meal to render his feces distasteful.
6. Booby-trap a few piles with Tabasco sauce or cayenne pepper.
7. Use remote punishment such as a squirt from a hose or blowing an air horn just as the dog begins to eat the feces. Pairing an aversive event with the act of eating the feces may stop the behavior.
8. Clean the feces from the yard as soon as your dog defecates.
9. Walk your dog in a leash so that you can control his/her movements.

Coprophagy is a very difficult behavior to extinguish. It may be the case that you will have to manage your dog's environment for the rest of his/her life to prevent the behavior.

The website I found this on is: http://www.animalalliances.com/behavior/dogs/coprophagy.html

Hey there!

Well i heard from our trainer that it does happen, something to do with a vitamin or mineral defieciency, not exactly sure, i could be horribly wrong!

I only remember that we were told to discourage it, as they can pick up diseases, not sure what he could get from himself, guess its mainly from strange dogs' poop!

Best to google it or speak to your vet.

Thank you so much everyone for all your responses and warm welcomes. My vet assures me that Paco is healthy and that's not the problem. I feed them only healthy natural food - they don't eat anything but that - no table scraps. They eat only natural treats - the same ones all the time. Thank goodness I don't have to worry about him eating other dog poo (except maybe Lola's) since they rarely go outside, if they do they are on a short leash with us. I'll try some of the suggestions Liz posted from the website. I think mostly the problem is that since we work all day - it is hard to train him not too. Never had this problem with Lola. Thanks again everyone! I really appreciate all the input.

ahh... another poop eater...

well... my Lola use to eat her poo when she was a puppy - it was really gross and I couldnt figure out why. I came to a few conclusions...1) she must really like it (haha..GROSS) 2) she was getting rid of the evidence.

what I had to do, was everytime she pooped (when I was there) she'd go to sniff it and I'd say "no" or "out" she knows "out" means " get out of there" lol.

It really took some time to break her out of this habbit. If the poop was left, and I wasn't home to pick it up, you could be sure she'd shred it up and i'd find pieces in the living room or the kitchen. She was now doing it to be delibrate...I would tell people she was a poo flinger...

Recently, I've started to put her back into the crate - for a few reasons - one she'd find a way to destroy something (usually a pillow) but the poo flinging was really REALLY upsetting me.

She's 2.5 yrs old now, and the crate isn't big enough for her to poop and sleep. She knows to do her duty when I'm home or hold it.

the other day, I didnt pick up her poo fast enough ( i guess) and she decided to bring a small piece in the living room- I caught her- she stop, droped and rolled! lol litterally... as to say... it wasnt me...lol (the 1st time in at least 3 months)

it's something you'll have to work on with him - it's gross, but can be managed.

YUP!! Been there done that...ummm...not me tho...my dogs. Before I lost my home I had 5 little dogs and 2 of them were 'into' poop eating:evil: BUT the hot sauce alllllmost worked....but not completely. THEN I went out and bought an air horn....AND THAT SURE ENDED IT FOR GOOD!!!!!!:funny: After all doggies had eaten I closed off the room where they ate (the kitchen) I had pee pads in a corner of the kitchen....they *ALL* would do their business right after they ate....well after each meal I stayed just out of view....as soon as I saw the 2 poop-eaters get ready to
snack on the stuff I blasted the air horn!! I only had to do this about 4 times.....and they totally stopped. It got to the point of them seeing me in the doorway and that told them..."DON'T EVEN THINK IT!!"......they never done it again!! ......oh...WELCOME to the Forum:flower:

LOL That's hilarious! I'm willing to try it just about anything. It is so gross. He seems to fling it also. And I think he actually likes the way it tastes even stores some in his bedding. Lola looks at him with disgust. She won't even go on the pad if there is poop on it until you remove it. I thought of putting him back in the crate again - but I feel bad since he is good otherwise and him and Lola curl up together during the day.

crate isn't a punishment - My Lola has actually put herself in the crate the past 2 mornings as I was brushing my teeth. She's use to the routine, and I know I wont come home to a poop flinging mess. Plus, I hve the crate lined with an extra blanket, in addition to a nice soft bed, her fav. "frog" stuff animal, then a blanket over the crate to help keep in her body heat (since she LOVES to snuggle up and keep warm). When she was a pup she was crate trained, then I gave her the freedom to rome. The truth is, she sleeps most of the day when i'm not there, so she's not missing much.

but the crate is definately not a punishment.

You Lola looks like My Lola a little... Paco is very handsome.

Lola wont poop on the paper if there's pee on it - she's high maintenance. She'll poop next to it, but not on it, unless it's clean. lol... little brat.

I love my little mama... you all have me considering to get a second - i'm looking into adopting one, maybe a Sr- although a baby would be fun - just a lot of work.

Adopting an older dog is a very nice thing to do, there are so many pups out there that have been abandoned or abused and that need a good home and some one to love then unconditionally.
But you are right of course a baby is much more fun. And they are not set in bad habits, a pup can be trained to be the way you want it to be.
Let us know about your decision, hopefully you will get a new baby soon, then we can go through the pains and joys of a second together!!!:headbang:

Just wanted to add my experience with this poop eating thing.

When Jemma is on kibbles and/or cooked, she snacked on her poop, too. Even on premium brands and I've tried quite a few with her.

When fed a raw diet, she was not interested in it whatsoever. I found this interesting even myself because people who advocate feeding raw always say that it's the healthiest diet you can provide a dog and I didn't buy it at all until I saw all the changes in Jemma (whiter teeth - no more dentals!, no poop snacking, disappearance of the recurrent ear infections she had since she was 8 weeks old, etc).

IMHO, I would say that diet has a lot to do with Coprophagy.

Well i heard from our trainer that it does happen, something to do with a vitamin or mineral defieciency, not exactly sure, i could be horribly wrong!
After talking to my vet, and PetSmart, I was told the same thing Zealot mentioned above...I was told they smell something (vitamin or mineral) in their poo that they think they need (they don't, they're completely healthy...they just think they do!).
It was suggested that I get some pills called "Deter" for coprophagia treatment. My guy chewed a tablet once a day, and we noticed in about a week or 2, he was no longer interested on his "little snacks". Now he doesn't do it anymore, and is no longer on the pills.

Hope this helps?

Yup!! Same here!! All my 5 babies had there own crate with soft pillows and blankets...they just LOVED them...I just kept all their crate doors open and they loved cuddling up in them and nap. I'll tell you something REEEEALLY FUNNY!! When I still had my condo I rented out the master bedroom to a male friend of mine and right outside his bedroom door was the washer & dryer that he could use. Well my Oreo always had it out to embarrass the heck out of me. He just loved stuffing all the toys in his crate before he took a nap. Well Mike my housemate one evening before he went to work did a quick load of laundry...I was downstairs on my computer...Mike came downstairs and left for work. Then I thought it would be a good time to wash everyones beddings from their crates. I got to Oreo's crate pulling out many many toys til I got to his blanket....and I discovered an odd piece of cloth thing...I looked at it for about 5 minutes wondering what the heck it was...then like a brick to my head...it was a THONG:shock: AND IT SURE WASN'T MINE!!!!! I looked at Oreo and I swear I heard him giggling!!! :funny:Now how the heck was I going to give it back to Michael???.....I went upstairs and opened his door and thank goodness he hadn't folded up his laundry so I threw it onto the pile and closed the door. From eating poo to thongs!! They are out to get us...run...run for your life!!

Haha.. My concern would be for that dog, and of course Lola and my family. i'll keep you all posted- for now it's me and lola.

I'm anti :evil:poo flinging snackers! lol - I still think Anne's Fog horn is funny as ever

haha, dogs are crazy, they link stinky socks and feet, the stinker the better... and undies on the floor are fair game..lol

the worst is not noticing they where the holes are, to finding them either after you've put them on (after the laundry) or when you find them and open the garment to find there are as many holes as there are stars in the sky! lol

Brianne,

Really?! Where can I get this tablet called "Deter" from? I would love to try it! Paco is such a wonderful little boy - it would be a blessing if he wouldn't be a poo eater anymore!

I don't think keeping them in the crate is cruel - in fact I keep the crate open for Lola to go in whenever she wants - she will even swing the door and go in when you tell her to. We are just gone for such long hours many times - I don't want them having to sit with their legs crossed for that long. That's why I litter trained them and they do wonderful at it. Plus I like them to have access to water and food all day. Paco nibbles and has a tendency to lose weight quickly if he doesn't eat regularly. He's a little on the slim side - where as Lola is the opposite - she's what we call a little "thick". Not to mention they are window perchers - they love watching out the windows - our windows go down to the floor in our condo, and our neighbors get a kick out of visiting them while they walk their dogs. This keeps my babies and the neighbors entertained - LOL

Thanks so much!
Lori

Hi Lori!
I got them from PetSmart. They were recommended by both my vet, and the PetSmart staff, as safe and effective. I was hesitant, not thinking it would actually work, but it really did!
This is what they look like (we used the one in the box)...
PS-I just stuck them in a peice of cheese so they seemed more appealing!

Thanks for the info on the Deter. I have heard that is does not work but I will try based on your experience. Happy eats Sammi's poo. Not his own. I think I will switch him to the same food she eats and give them the deter. That way all the poop will (sorry here) be tasting the same. Maybe he will not eat it if her poo tastes like his poo.

The box says one pill per day for their weight. I might give two to Sammi because she is on the weight borderline. I gave them each one last night and one this morning. I think I will give Sammi another tonight. I have also switched to feeding them only 2 times per day. Less poo and I am home and can pick it up more diligently.

I hope it works for you because it didn't for me. Nala just LOVES poop! I can walk in the room and catch her - and she KNOWS she's in trouble. She drops the poop and runs away. lol
It's so nasty tho... I was told to use a meat tenderizer in the food also. I have been doing this for over a month now and it still doesn't seem to work. However, I don't think she always "eats" it. Or maybe it's that she starts to eat it (because its in pieces and spread out) then changes her mind once she realizes its really not that tasty.

Well, I bought it yesterday - so I am giving it to both dogs - since Paco doesn't discriminate about eating anyone's poop. Him and Lola have taken it for 2 days - so I am anxious to see what happens. The man I spoke with at Petsmart told me that his mom has to chis and one of them had the same problem. She stopped hers with pineapple juice - they sprinkled it on the dogs food. That's one I hadn't heard of! But who knows - I may end up trying that - if this don't work. My husband thinks we should do both! LOL to cover all bases! We just **LOVE** our babies and cuddle with them and everything....PLUS put all sorts of somewhat silly clothes on them...buy them beautiful boot's ...sweaters....dresses and etc. Maybe they are trying to tell us something.....like..."COME ON MUM...you want me to WEAR THIS!??" We are small and can't run as fast as wolves so poop is the next best thing for us." Here is a report on the Deter tablets: We are using the tabs for more than a week. I am giving Sammi two tabs and Happy one tab twice a day right after they eat. Happy eats Sammi's poo but not his own. So I am more concerned with "flavoring" Sammi's poo than Happy's own poo.

Happy is still eating Sammi's poo. But he is leaving it alone for awhile sometimes. Which is something he never did before. This has given me the opportunity to pick it up before he eats it.

Just today he had a piece and was running under the bed with it (way GROSS) with me yelling at him to drop it. Well he came out with it and dropped it. This was a first. I made a big deal about picking it up, flushing it, and rewarding him.

I did more reading about the Deter today. It says that it takes at least two weeks to work. You have to continue on maintenance tabs after they stop.

Because there is a glimmer of a change, I am going to buy more and continue for another two weeks. I will certainly let you know if he stops.

But I bought a bottle of 120 tablets so I am determined to follow this through until they are all gone! I'll keep everyone posted but I am hopeful - no caca breath lately which is very nice! Sammi was pooping and Happy let me walk away and come back with the toilet paper and pick it up. Before he would snatch it up before I could get it. I picked it up and he followed me to the bathroom. I show it to him, open the toilet and talk to him while I flush it. Then we go and get a treat right away.

Slight improvement. I will let you know how the poop saga goes.

Besides the Deter, I have switched to feeding them only twice a day so I am home when they poop. Also Happy is eating the same food as Sammi. So their poop tastes the same I guess! He was not eating his own poop so maybe that is making a difference too.

But I did not see any improvement until I started the Deter.

OK! So I have this problem too! I read up on it and I got the same info that some one else had posted. Catching them in the act is hard- especially because I'm not home all day with him. AndI wouldn't be able to be consistant. But I did read if you feed them pineapple or add MSG to their food- it changes the taste of the poo- and they don't like it. I haven't tried this yet though. I would try the pineapple first- I don't know about the health risks because MSG is not good for humans. Hope that helps!

12-02-2007, 02:20 PM
There is definitely improvement when I am home. Happy has started to let me come over to pick up Sammi's poo. I have him follow me to the bathroom and we flush it together. He and Sammi then get treats. At least he lets me get to it now and is not snacking on it immediately or running with it to another location.

Of course, I am not sure what is happening when I am not home. But I'm not finding micro pieces on the pads either that were evidence of chomping on it.

I will point out that I did change their feeding schedule and I am home more often when they are actually pooping and therefore can pick it up and make a fuss about Happy getting his treat.

Happy is also eating the same food as Sammi so maybe he is getting the flavor he was craving in her poo when he eats. If his food tastes like her poo used to and now her poo tastes bad then maybe that is what has made the difference.

Anyone tell me if this is acceptable behaviour...? or is this another no no?

I kind of thought that maybe its just him being a "mother figure" to her... as the mothers usually eat their babies poo and clean them a lot? but it still seems out of the ordinary to me... you know, with Gords being a man dog and all that???

He is cleaning her. He has cleaned her ears and fact too right? This is not sexual for them as far as I know. Dogs bond in many ways. This is bonding between the two of them. Wolf puppies are kept clean by the males and females. Mutual grooming is very important for many kinds of mammals: monkeys, apes, meerkats etc.

When Nooshie is older she may "tell" Gordy that she doesn't want him to do this anymore for her. Sammi and Happy do not lick each other at all. Sammi is very clear about what she will tolerate. She gives Happy clear signals with stance and growls.

I did laugh out loud though at "doodat" and I wanted to tell you that acceptable behavior depends on who you ask and what species they are! LOL

Thanks Faye...
The advice is great and I will jkust let Gordy go about his "grooming her doodat" until she says that she is old enough to do it herself.
And about "doodat" i just couldnt think of a politically correct wayt o say it... it was the first thing that came to mind.

lol.. doodat is a cute name... I'm gonna start using that.. lol

I agree with Faye and think it's a natural grooming process...I'm happy to hear the pups are coming along!

Lola's been really great, I have been crating her again, which makes a difference, believe it or not she goes into the care her self before I leave for work (I made is uper comfy for her- If i could fit in there, I'd be on there too).

The other night she tried to sneak a lick, but I caught her... I dont know what her deal is, maybe she wanted to make sure it was fresh? lol... I have no clue, but she's been really great and I'm happy to report there haven't been any turd snatchings, munchings, or snackings in quite sometime.

Elisha thats great news!
I believe that once you have an addiction you sometimes relapse and need a lil "lick" just to remind you that you gave it up for a reason. So you cant blame the lil girl.

Better give your sexy lil pup a beeg hug from me to say well done on the non-pooch chowing!

I'll buy some for Happy. I like formally known as the turd burglar. Like formally known as Prince. Turd lickers anonymous.

I like doodat too. What a handy word. Zoe who is lurking here lately used to call her female dog's doodat her rosebud. I like that too. But doodat is very happy sounding somehow.

LOL, I was reading at work too. But I was working with my two best girlfriends so I got to turn to one of them and explain why I was laughing. However, she is not a dog mommy and did not relate to the term doodat as much as I am! It did make for an interesting moment at work though.

Turd Burgler. i love it. Haha. So funny how we get so annoyed at them for doing it... but yet we can still see the humor in it. Even tough we really want it to stop.

Wow, whats in a word... lol

Yeah doodat is rather genteel and non offensive, its politically correct!
I like rosebud too... My grandmother always used to refer to the female area as a cookie!
So would that make Gordy a cookie monster! lol

Oh I like cookie!!! I had been using cootie. I actually used it in the delivery room..."It hurts inside my cootie!" Dr, hubby, and friends all laughed over that. I couldn't think of anything else at the time, hehe.

We always said smooshie when I was little.

My friend had a little niece who was hot one summer. She was lifting her dress and fanning her doodat. They asked her what she was doing and she said, "I'm cooling my pear".

Then there is "looking for the little man in the boat". Think about it! See if you can figure it out.

I died laughing when my friend told me that story. Of course we were working at the Reference Desk at the Library with people all around us expecting us to be quiet librarians. I had to walk off the desk.

Now in the summer we talk about how it is so hot we will have to go "cool our pears".

omg! i am going out to buy an air horn tonight. my dogs poo eating/hiding has been freaking me out! the vet suggested crushed pineapple in her food to deter her from chomping away and my little pisser just decided to eat ONLY the pineapple and then continued poo munching anyways. i've been at the end of my rope dealing with this.

O.k, I never thought I would ever need to post on this thread and ask advice, but Ronin has found an interest in digging into the litterbox where Bianca and Roxy do their business. I too think it's disgusting, and when we see him in there, we reprimand him. I don't know if that is the correct thing to do either. What's gross is he'll be digging around in there if we have our back turned to him, and then he'll come out and want to give us kisses....with litter stuck to his nose!!! EWWWW! So I assume there isn't a sure-fire remedy for this habit??

I think in Ronin's case he could be taught to stay away from the box. A sharp no should work. You could also spray him with lemon water in a spray bottle.

How about a dog gate with a little door in it that is too small for Ronin but big enough for the cats and Bianca to go though. I have seen gates with little doors in them for the smaller dogs/cats to walk through and still keep the people or larger animals out. I think I saw this at Orvis. I can find this for you if you cannot find them.

We're definitely trying to keep him away from the box. We have all eyes on him now. When we have caught him in there, we've done the NO! and he seems to keep attempting to go back to it. If we tell him no enough, maybe he'll eventually get it.
Tony's been looking online for some sort of a cat door, but not sure how much effort he has given it. I will try the Orvis. Is that an online store?

I never thought I would catch Bianca eating poop, but this morning when I was getting ready to leave for work, I walk into the kitchen, and our laundry room which is adjacent to the kitchen is where we keep the litter box, I heard her rustling around and thought she was going potty. Well she comes out and she got a piece of poop in her mouth!!! OMG this is a first for her! I immediately said Bianca NO! and she dropped it and waddled off with her tail between her legs. (Boy did I feel bad) I hope she doesn't start doing that! We've gotten to the point where Ronin has pretty much stayed out of it, at least to our knowledge, now she's started to do it!

Princess J, since my last post I have learned that the gates with the walk throughs for the smaller dogs are at more than one vendor. If you google dog gates you will find them. Let me know if you need more help. Orvis is online as well as a catalog.

Thanks Faye! We've started looking at them again recently due to the sofa mishap with Ronin. I'll do a google search and see what more I can find. WIth as big as he is getting, we'll need something pretty tall and sturdy. He's getting soo very strong now. I tried walking him the other day, and he was actually walking me! I have noticed some of the gates have extensions you can purchase. They think of everything , don't they? It seems Ronin has laid off on the litterbox, but I was shocked to see Bianca eating poop. After I reprimanded her yesterday, she went for it again last night. I'm starting to transition her from puppy food to adult food by mixing the two. I don't know if that has anything to do with her starting to eat the poop. (I've started early this week with mixing the two foods). She has NEVER done it before. I was so shocked! We usually check the box frequently to ensure it stays clean, but usually between Roxy and Bianca, there's usually something always in there. With as much as those two go, I could scoop all day! lol!

Poo eating Paco update:

It's been about 5 months since my original post. I gave Paco Deter for a couple of months. I noticed he stopped eating his poo but would relapse occasionally the first few months. The good news is that now, I think he has given it up since I don't find anymore hidden in his bed or "cookie" crumbs next to his litter box or really nasty breath. I don't know if it was actually from being on Deter (as I was determined myself!) for so long. Or if he has just outgrown his dirty little habit since he is now about a year and half. But whatever it was I am just thrilled it has stopped.

I just hope he continues to leave it alone :)
