Hi Sharon, We've gone to our veterinarian for over 20 years, so I 100% trust him not to administer needless treatments for money, or to overdo what we can't afford---he gives us suggestions for alternatives when it's available. We'll have to remind him no Lepto for these two, and that's only because he is in "cow town" and so were we 7 years ago, 100 miles away. So it's understandable he gave it to Roman once. He's a dairy rancher. Even Sheba is an X-cow pie roller. LOL :D  :D

The "extra" optional thing he recommended was the heart worm mothly meds since Roman and Elle were started on it---so to just continue on.

We may have to add misquito and tick treatment, but that's probably something we buy and give at home once a month.

Do you have a vet you can open up to, share your concerns, and just ask him what the basics are?

H&T get a combination rabies shot (no lepto) and distemper-also, a monthly heartworm pill (interceptor because it takes care of hookworms, whipworms, and tapeworms as well) and that's it!

I don't use flea/tick topical treatments due to their high toxicity levels and my kids tiny size. Oh, and they got a 3-year vaccination this year so no more rabies (but have to do distemper annually) until 2007!

Hope this helps!
Lys

Barb-make sure that the flea/tick treatment you use (if any) is safe for puppies and along with that, you might want to think about not doing it on any of them if it is not safe for Elle-after all, she will be exposed to it from Roman and Sheba...Just a thought...

Hi Lys and anyone who knows... :D Roman has been "riding" on Sheba's Advantage flea meds, and it's been working just fine. I'm hoping the same for misquito and tick, but they are a huge problem here already as I can see them. Sheba does not have this med yet. Do you think those misquito and tick meds will be enough on Sheba when we go camping this year? Thanks for any advice. Barb :D

Barb im so worried about this flea thing I had Nina and Kutchum on advantage last year but a friend of mine had to put her dog to sleep because of that said skin turned pink and the flea med did something to the dog inside the chem went in his body and messed him up . Im scared i dont know what to do. :(

Sharon-Most modern vets agree that the Kennel Cough Vaccination is not necessary unless the dog is going into a kennel/boarding facility (and that is just because the facilities require it). The reasoning is that it is not proven that the vaccine (that comes internasal and intermuscular) actually prevents it (similar to human flu shots) due to the different strains of the disease and the fact that the vaccine only contains a few of them. Most dogs diagnosed with KC have a different strain then the few that are covered. Also, it has been determined that the vaccine actually has a life span of 6 months, so in order to be effective, it would need to be administered 2 times a year. Bordetella considered a simple disease to treat and cure in adult dogs but there can be complications that require extensive treatment (think human cough turning into Brochitis). If you do get it, make sure that they give Lucky the intermuscular (shot), the internasal is aweful for the dog to experience because they put it up into their noses/sinuses and they have a hard time breathing (wouldn't you if you had liquid in there too?!). Hope this helps, I'd recommend looking into it a bit further because there is alot of information on it and then you can decide for yourself what is best for Lucky
FYI-H&T both have to have an annual bordetella (KC) vacinnation in order to be allowed in shows but when they are done, will no longer get it...

I'm still for it.... Naz had KC and it was not fun... but we live in a public area (on base) where lots of dogs are and not always the healthiest looking and plus I take him to Petsmart, and will be taking him to Groomers where again lots of animals are so for me it is a must.....

thanks Alyssa...Lucky does need the KC vaccine in order for him to continue his training classes...so he will get it done this time...and i will make sure they do not give him the one that goes up the nose
