Hey everyone my name is Krystal and I have a 9 week old Chi named Ryleigh. I have been following all the tips on potty and crate training but am still having unresolved problems. I will take Ryleigh outside to do his business and use the command 'go potty' he will go if i give him enough time but then the second we enter the house he will pee 4+ times more in a row. I wait a looonnnggg time outside but he will still come in a go. also i bought the littlest crate they had but he will still pee in it at night or during the day...what is up with all this?!! any advice will be soooooo appriciated!:headbang: http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h163/unwrittenk/rileigh_8_11_07.jpg

First welcome to Club Chihuahua! 2nd so long your sure he isn't sick or have any type of infection...don't fret your little one is STILL VERY VERY LITTLE! He is still a baby baby and may of needed more time with his mama but given the fact is what it is you may just have to be patient and give him time. Take him out every hour to every half hour to see if that helps. Everything else seems to be right. He sounds like he is adjusting to growing up just be patient as hard as it is... my little one is 1 year old and is still not full proof..... she is doing a lot better than she use to be but she too is still learning.... :)

Hang in there!

Hi Krystal, Welcome to Club Chihuahua! Ryleigh is so cute! Yeah, I agree with Brenda, great advice, that Ryleigh is very young and so give it a lot more time, like months. Shampoo and clean the areas where he is coming in to go.

Is Ryleigh being put right back in his crate when he come back inside? And if so, is he peeing in that tiny little crate? If he's not being put in the crate right away, go ahead and start doing that and save play time for another time. You could stuff somthing in the back of the crate to make it smaller in there so he will whine and cry to get out to potty.

He may also need another "always" tiny spot and not full run of the house for quite a while, like part of the Kitchen or bathroom fenced off, or some room without carpet or covered carpet. If you want to, I would also suggest to get him a potty pad for this area to save your floor for this area and put him on it and say "go potty".

Another suggestion that could be tried, is have him do what he does outside now, carry him back in the house, and then carry him back outside for more time. That might surprise him and he will catch on it's time to go outside. He should be leashed the entire time while he is outside and right with you until he knows that he is only to go potty outside and that this is what this time is for...ie, no playing or dilly-dallying along the way. LOL Then carry him back in to his crate.

So maybe some of this will help, or a combo of what will work for you and Ryleigh, and I know other's have a lot of good information to help you with. Don't worry though, he will be catching on before you know it. Please keep us up on how Ryleigh's doing. :)

Roman's mom, Barb and Brenda give great advice...he is still very young, and you need a lot of patience when potty training. I never thought Bianca would be potty trained EVER!! But one day, she just started going where she was supposed to and not one accident since. Don't worry, one day he will surprise you! By the way, welcome to the forum! Your baby is ADORABLE!! :wub:I hope we hear a lot more from you!!

Hi Krystal,

First off welcome, Ryleigh is very cute. It takes 4 months for the bladder on a puppy to mature. The muscles(?) of the bladder are still week. If you will notice that sometimes he will pee a good amount, but others it will be a trickle. Just like our human kids helping them train the bladder is a challenge. Be patient with him and take him out and then put him on the piddle pads. I do not use them on Izzee. She has done a wonderful job on potty training, But if she starts to squat as we get in I tell her no you go potty outside and take her back out. A pain, but will be well worth it in the end.

Good Luck!

Hi Krystal-
You have some great advice from the ladies above!!
It takes patience and persistence. Give your little one a chance and if you feel yourself getting frustrated, take a time out. lol.

Hi Krystal,
Welcome to CC! Ryleigh is so precious and so tiny. Be patient and follow the advise that many of the ladies gave you about your little baby.
Hummie was almost a year old before he really got the potty thing down. ( I guess he's a slow learner. LOL) my other baby got it within a month, using a litter box.

Good luck and remember he's so young so your going to really have to teach him lots of things his furmommy would have shown him.

Ack, I just posted a response in the training section, Krystal! Anyway, I didn't add much, but just want to mainly encourage you to have some patience. I was nervous and losing faith in my Sherman but he has come a long way now. I can tell you from recent experience that the folks here are right. Ryleigh WILL learn. Sorry, I called Ryleigh a "she" in the other thread. I mean "he."
I think mainly it is that your baby is so young and even tho he loves you he still needs time to feel really comfortable in your home. I mean in the sense of getting comfortable and knowing the sights, sounds, and routines. It seems to me that once Sherman really knew this is his home he stopped getting so excited that he couldn't control his frequent peeing. Now he still pees a lot, but not nearly so much as before. When he is in a really excitable state I leave him in his caged area for about 10 minutes or so until he has peed 3 or 4 times, then let him out. He responds well to that and seldom has an "accident" now.
Keep up hope! Ryleigh will be a top notch puppy citizen in no time. : )

My only suggestions are these:

Maybe he feels too much pressure to pee outside....maybe the way "go potty" is said makes him think "you're bad". So when you take him outside, don't just stand there impatient, waiting for him to go and getting frustrated when he doesn't go on command.

Instead, learn when he does/should need to go. So first thing in the morning, bring him outdoors and run around with him, play with him, that should get his system moving and give him the urge to go. When he does go, give him lots of praise and play with him a bit more in case he needs to go again.

Then bring him indoors. Dogs usually get the urge to go outside when they first wake up in the morning, after eating and after long naps, so try to take him out when you think he should have the urge, get him thinking that going outside and relieving himself is a fun thing to do that gets him some loving and he should start performing better.

Welcome to C.C. I am also new here and have found a lot of helpful information from others here.
I have a 8 month old girl who was trained but took a while to train. she was first trained to pee pads then when she was confident with that we would move the pee pad closer to the door every day until they were outside, this worked well for me. She is now fully potty trained.
I also have a 7 week old boy chihuahua who is very smart and also uses the pee pads. I have only had him for three days and he hasn't had one accident inside. And no he was not trained when i got him. The pee pads are very good as they have a scent which a person can't smell that draws the attention of the dog to the pad to pee. He is not trained to pee outside yet but will be soon. Hope this information helps you. Good luck and once again welcome.
