We've been trying to train Teddy with going outside to go to the bathroom. I put the puppy potty pads down for him for the times when I can't catch him to take him outside. He always goes outside when I take him out, but I can't catch him all the time and it's like he doesn't know it's bad to go potty inside but he also knows he's supposed to go outside to go potty. Any ideas on how to help? Teddy needs your help! He gets in trouble by his grandma for making the area smell because of the puppy pad. Don't let him get in trouble anymore! :-P

If the pads are changed regularly it shouldn't smell at all. I actually have pads down for Nala & Ollie, which they use ALL the time. When I am not home, at work etc etc. When the weather is nice I do take them out and they know to go outside. I like to get them out to enjoy a little walk and the nice weather - run around a little bit. But they do use the pads basically all the time.

Are you able to take him out when the weather isn't so nice? I know mine won't even go out if I tried to walk them from the door out to the sidewalk. lol (that's why the pads are their MAIN bathroom)

He likes to go outside but its been snowing out since ive gotten him. He just usually stands there and wimpers. He goes whenever i take him out but its just the accidents that he has when i cant catch him in time. He doesnt reallyt have any signs that he gives me that he has to go so i dont know when he has to go.

I know what you mean because I can't tell when Ollie has to go either. He doesn't squat even a little bit or lift his leg. He will just stand there and p p. lol
Try keeping a few pads around so he knows to go on the pad. Then gradually remove and maybe just have 2 out. That's what I did and now (only about 5 weeks of having him) Ollie will leave a room to go use the pad in the other room.

Well we have two out, one in my bedroom kind of hidden behind a chair that he goes on all the time and one in the kitchen for when were gone(we always put up the baby gate when we leave and he stays in the kitchen). My mom gets mad though and wants him to know to go outside instead of on the puppy pad all the time.

For me they know to go when they are brought outside and also know to use their wee wee pads. I don't take my babies out in the bad weather. I know they won't go outside if there is snow or rain so the wee wee pads are good for that. (also I am gone from 7am until about 4:15-so they need to go between then)

Since yours probably will have someone there to take them out that is great. But do you think they will go out when the weather is bad out?

Mine goes out when it rains..but he isn't to fond of it..Can't seem to get him to understand what the wee wee pads are for. he just snifs and looks at me like I am crazy. I did clean his accident up with one and have it sitting on the floor...he still has nothing to do with it. I am going crazy trying to train him that way...although I haven't really pushed it.
I do know that my step mom suggested putting the dog in a really small space with food water and the pads. put the pad on one side and the food on the other..that is how she trained the dog that they have. I do have a friend that says that since I am working on outside..then just leave it.

Well he knows he's supposd to go outside to go to the bathroom and he does whenever I take him out. He does in the rain he doesnt really like it though. He wont go in the snow and thats why weve been having so much trouble with it because its been snowing out since we got him. When we dont catch him though he goes on the potty pads. I just dont know how Im going to get him to stop going on the carpet sometimes.

Just give it time - he will get it. Keep the pads out where they are in view. I know earlier you mentioned something about it being behind a chair. When he uses the pad praise him alot and give him treats so that he knows what a good boy he was!

Nala is about 9 months now. For the most part she ALWAYS uses her pad. But once in a blue she will go in the far bedroom. I know when I first got her - the reading I was doing said that chi's take longer to train.

Its weird because he does go when you take him out. And he knows hes not supposed to go inside but just doesnt know what else to do. We always take him out the same door to the same area. Idk if he should bark at the door someday when he learns or what.

I apologize if anyone mentioned this, I didn't get a chance to read all replies.

Sophie's obedience teacher has recommended hanging bells from the doorknobs (low enough for puppy to reach them) and start touching their paw to it on the way out the back door. They *should* begin to ring it to let you know they need to go out. I plan on doing this soon, as Sophie doesn't really give me notice either. (she did let me know once and I was so excited, lol.)

ps. she graduated from puppy obeidence class a few days ago!!

That is really cute! The door we take him out though has two stairs that lead down to the door and hes too short to go down any stairs. Maybe we could do that to the front door though so he knows at least to do that. Thats a good idea.
