Litter box training

Ok peps...
I need some tips and advice on how to litter train my tito. As you all know he was sick and what he got he got from being outside. Well, at least that is what hubby and I think. So this means that I am litter training him now. I can't deal with him being sick again. The ticks, fleas, and heart worms here are bad enough. Please let me know if you guys have any tips or adivce. Thanks!

I started Hercules out on this from when I first got him.. just continue to take him to it when it was time to go potty and praise him profusely when he got it right.. Hummer never really took to the litter box, but he does pee close to it which is fine with me.. I've got it sitting on top of a few pee pee pads.

I've never trained Roman and Elle to use a litter box. Roman and Elle use potty pads and Roman gets to go out on a leash in the evening with Sheba.

Some put the potty pad inside the box and some use the dog litter. Maybe that was one of Sandy Balto's chis, and one would stand on the edge of the box with tail end out of the box. I think it was her Chi. LOL

Aren't ticks gross! We don't have them here in the yard, but everywhere does, rest stops, parks, beaches, trails, etc., so we stopped letting the dogs out when Sheba got a few. We use Atvantage for fleas and want to try Atvantix with hopes it works as good for ticks as it does for fleas. We never have one flea anymore.

With all that, I can see why you want to Tito to use the box. :flower:

this weekend I am going to buy the litter tray and some litter..or should I just use the puppy pads. Do you guys just use the tray or do you get the whole box. My hunny seems to think that the whole box would do...but I think this would freak him out..then again I have no clue.
Keep your fingers and toes crossed that it works. Can't deal with this taking him outside and freaking out each time he goes out because of the ordeal we have just been through.

I'd do like Barb suggested and place a pee pad inside the box with some litter, and definitely outside the box.. Chihuahua's like to do the little poo poo dance and it doesn't always land in the box.. lots of times Hercules little butt is hanging over the sides! :-)
