"Where Natural Food is Raw Food"

Has anyone tried this raw food diet for their chis before? The only two head offices are located in Western Canada, but I hear that many dog owners are feeding their dogs this brand. Their website is www.mountaindogfood.com. Please tell me what you think.

Also, do are any of you afraid to feed your dogs a raw diet?

Sorry, I haven't heard that brand of raw diet but the site was interesting!

That being said and to answer your question, no, I am not afraid to feed my kiddos RAW food. I don't advise or give them actual bones since they lack the strength to properly eat them, but ground bone/marrow it highly nutritious for them. Also, assuming you handle it carefully like any other raw meat, salmonella does not affect dogs as much as it does humans so it is safer to feed them raw meats.

I mix the RAW with regular canned food and kibble and use it as a wonderful addition to their diets.

I just got home from running to Pet Planet and buying a 2 lb container of Mountain Dog Food. Well, the lady there told me that if Loppi is going to be on a RAW diet, then I should not be giving her any kibbles or canned food. I asked her why, and she showed me a brochure. It said that once a dog is on a RAW diet, the pH level of their tummies adjust to the uncooked meat. However, if you mix it in with other processed dog foods, that can alter the pH level, so there will not be a balance. The lady told me it could cause some harm. I wonder what I should do. I never heard of it before and I see that Heuser and Tally are more on canned, kibble, and RAW.

I wouldn't call it afraid, but I'm more on the cautious side. I won't feed my dogs raw meat even if it's a steak out of my refrigerator. But that's just me.

I see it as an added concern to take the utmost of care. Even canned dog food is not supposed to sit in the dish for longer than 20 minutes before bacteria starts to grow, so I throw out many dishes of food around here.

And raw meats---we had a meat business for processing, cutting, wrapping and freezer storage(4 generations of Roman's Dad's family) and you have to know things can happen to the meat before and during packaging. It can even be dropped on the floor and put back in the main pile if the processing plant is like that and there is the Salmonella starting already. Freezing does not kill Salmonella. Processing plants for humans probably have stricter guidelines and inspections for things more than a dogfood plant. I'll added too, that what I'm talking about is USDA inspected. I'm not sure if dog food gets this seal of approval for the scrutiny in inspection.

We were so highly inspected that we were written up for me leaving one rinsed plate in the wash sink. We learned a lot from these inspectors and micro biologists.

Your freezer should to be kept at zero or below to keep it safe. Then do not keep it past the expiration date. To thaw, in the refrigerator is the ideal place to do this, but the microwave oven is safe and also in a sink full of cold water, provided you change the water every 30 minutes .

Mixing the raw or cooked meats with the other types of food are very hard on their kidneys because of all the protein. I know this because that's what my first Sheltie died from-eating our steak meat along with her own dog food. This was the case for my dog.

You can thaw frozen food in a sink full of cold water, provided you change the water every 30 minutes.

i agree with Barb..i don't think i would want Lucky on this type of diet...because of all the bacteria and sickness the can get from it...i'd talk to your vet before doing anything just in case

Oh, I called my vet the other day and surprisingly, her 3 dogs are all on the Mountain Diet as well. She's one of the best vets around my area also, so I'm not that concerned. I was doing some research on the net and all these sites keep saying that dogs are fine eating raw meat because of their short digestive tracts -- faster digestion, so not enough time for bacteria to grow into a phase where it becomes harmful.

UPDATE: Loppi is doing great on Mountain Dog Food. It's only been around a week, but her poop is already firmer, she seems more happy, and she LOVES the food. Also, I brush her teeth nightly but ever since she started this raw diet, I've stopped brushing her. Today I checked her teeth and surprisingly, all the tartar build-up that was there before has disappeared. It looks cleaner than when I brushed her pearly whites everyday!

Roman and Sheba love to get their teeth brushed every day. They have beef flavor this time and like it as much as the chicken. I like the smell of the chicken better when they get brushed, but oh well. LOL :D

Loppi used to use the chicken flavored ones before too! She's never tried the beef one before, but loves the chicken one.

Love,
Kathy

HI Kathy, How's Loppi doing with the Mountain Dog Food? I'll bet she thinks it's so good and her coat must be in so shiney. Roman always wants hamburger when I'm making the patties, so I know he'd love the Mountain Dog Food. LOL It's good to know it's helped Loppi's teeth so well too. :D

Loppi's doing really well with the Mountain Dog Food. When meal time comes, she gets really excited to see which meat she'll be having. :) Her coat is shinier and smoother than I've ever seen it.

I just started a thread about a shedding problem she's been having. I thought it might be due to raw food, but I asked a couple owners who feed their dogs raw diets, and they don't seem to have the problem. :? They said that if anything, shedding should be reduced. I'm still looking into this.

Thanks for asking!!
