Hey everyone!
Its time to start thinking about an official Kennel Name for me and I have come up with a few ideas...I'd love for you to vote from the ones I have thought of or share any ideas you have for names if you think of anything! Thanks!
Alyssa
PS-the explination for the three I have so far is this:
1) AMAZ is my first Initial and the first three letters of my last name (Alyssa Mazur)
2) GOLD'N is a combination of the name "GOLD" that is from Heuser's line to his grandfather (one of them will be bred to Tally) and the "N" is from her line (eg: H=DNK's Pocketful of GOLD by Neben's Hold the GOLD by Ch. Neben's Solid GOLD Sole; T=Show Me's Up Close N Personal out of Toy Valley's Mischief N Eden)
3) Matt's last name (and mine eventually) is Merlo (like the wine without the "T").

I like them all Lys! But I voted for AMAZ. http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung0903/grinser/grinning-smiley-013.gif I think it's kind of cool. But since you'll probably be changing your name to Merlo then that one's good too. Gosh I'm so indecisive! Either way you go they all sound great! :blob: :blob2:

I like Merlo. I thought of the wine right away. Like the Chis would be like fine wine....
I like them all, it was hard to choose but I voted for AMAZ b/c when I read it (before reading your explanations) I thought of "amazing chihuahua". I love names etc. that are spelled different and still have their own meaning behind it. Are you going to pronounce it like 'amaze'?

Yeah, it will read "amaze" if I chose that one...I like both AMAZ and MERLOT because I want a kennel name that is associated with my name so either work. I am leaning toward MERLOT because once we get married, people won't associate the AMAZ with me anymore since I wasn't planning on keeping my maiden name...but maybe I'll have to be Alyssa Mazur-Merlo-the things you do for your chihuahuas!!!
Either way, I already decided that Tally's litter(s) will start with Gold'N due to the puppy's bloodlines. So they will either be "AMAZ Gold'N -----" or "Merlot's Gold'N -----" We'll see what grows on me!
Oh, and I thought of one more name-CHILYS (like Chi-less) which is a combination of Chihuahuas and Alyssa! I don't know! HELP!
Thanks for the help guys-Anyone else have ideas?

Wow, that's a cool one too Jen! I think it may be too long though-shorter prefix names are better so that the puppy's names can be longer...But keep thinking, I appreciate the ideas!!!

I like Alysalot too. It is easy to say and there is no doubt about where those little chis would come from.

I like "Alysalot' too but I think it is too long...space is limited on registration papers (I think 26 letters including spaces) so idealy, it needs to be 6 or less letters from what other breeders have said...
Other breeders have suggested "Azur" (A. maZUR) but that is taken, and so is "M&M" so those two are out...
I have no clue right now-I like AMAZ but I absolutely can NOT stand (as in HATE) the song "Amazing Grace" and it totally reminds me of it!!! So we'll keep thinking! Thanks for your help guys!

We do too Tracy! I love the name but I'm not sure because there is a huge controversy going on the the chihuahua show world about Merle (the color) chihuahuas and I don't want people to think that I breed them...
We are not adding any more chis for the time being but are looking into purchasing a house and after that, we'll breed Tally assuming she gets her Ch. by then, lol!!! And even then, it will only be for another chi to show and the rest (if more than one) will be placed...I can't wait!!!

ive heard about that...there was some site i came across , a breeder had sent in a letter to a professor/doctor at a university and she showed his response on the site, he seemed to think it would be improbable for merles to occur in chis, yet i see them advertised on peoples sites all the time...so whats your opinion on this?? (ill try to find that site again)

Like I said, there is a huge controversy over this and it has gotten to the point that the CCA (The AKC Chihuahua Parent Club of our breed) has launched an investigation that will cost thousands of dollars but is extremely important to the wellfare of the breed.
There are several strong arguments on both sides of the issue but I tend to agree that an outside bloodline/breed had to be brought in to get the coloring and so am against them.
Here's the sides:
1) For (Pro) Merles: Argue that that standard states any color, solid, marked (spots), or splashed and Merle is splashed.
-Also, that up until recently, there were no standardized colors and dogs could not be properly registered, hence, there may have been blue/merle dogs that were not registerd as such and so there is a possiblity that the color lay dormant until the proper genes were crossed to produce merle.
2) Against (Con) Merles: Argue that all registerd merles can be traced back to one or two dogs from one breeder (which has proven to be a sign and pattern in other cases of unethical cross breeding).
-Also, basic genetics have found that the Merle gene is dominant and therefore would not have gone unseen for such a long period of time and then suddenly popped up out of nowhere.
-Add to that, other breeds are having a similar problem with merles popping up that are supposedly purebred although not seen in recent history (if ever) (eg: Pomeranians, Chins, etc.) and other parentclubs are also investigating the claims.
-Point out that until recent support and huge efforts to breed quality into merles from a few show breeders (who, by the way, have ceased their breeding practices using the dogs and have spayed/neutered all of their dogs that are merle or of merle bloodlines), that most chis with the coloring are grossly oversized, lacking in type and quality (meaning that you really can't tell that the dog is a chihuahua because it looks nothing like one) and so prove that another breed (such as a cardigan welsh corgi or a shetland sheepdog) was used.
After researching the topic for myself and speaking with several people on both sides of the issue, I feel that there is no solid evidence that the color came about naturally in the breed itself and so do not feel that it should be allowed as a color in our breed or registerable with the AKC. Plus, (and this is actually the most important point to me) there are already WAY TOO MANY people breeding chihuahuas for the wrong reasons, one being to make money, and most of them are the same people breeding merles and charging $1,000-$5,000 for a merle chihuahua, without papers usually, and with full breeding rights-which is fine if you want a huge, merle, mutt but don't call them chihuahuas then because they are not!
So that is my opinion on the topic and what I feel is best for the breed-and that is what every responsible breeder should be doing when they decide to produce more chihuahuas-improve apon the quality of dogs they have for the purpose of creating a healthy dog as close as possible to their vision and interpretation of the breed standard.
One of the biggest breeders in our breed said something to me that really hit me. He said:
"As a beginner in the show and breeding world, you will not do the breed any good. But as long as you don't do the breed any harm, then you are doing well as a novice."
Meaning that the dogs I produce will not be better than those produced by people who have been doing it for a long time but as long as the dogs I produce are not worse then the dogs I have now, I will be doing quite well for a beginning breeder!

Wow, I like what that breeder said to you. I'm sure over time you will improve the breed.
That was very very interesting about the Merle chis. Bringing in other breeds just to get a coat color will sure harm the chi breed. I had come across pics of merle chis and thought they were cute but I did not know how they were bred.
It is good to spread the word so these breeders will not be encouraged.
